Just over two years ago I decided to get Bob an iPad so he could put all his Keyboard music on it rather than take the 44 kgs of books in the motorhome. this was pre-Heime.
Opening the box he said "why the hell do I want this?". I was devastated as budgets were still tight with the after fire work we were still doing and burst into tears.
Since then he has upgraded to newer one and if you took it away, it would be worse than cutting off his arm or other appropriate parts of his body.
There are three MUST HAVE things in a guys life he tells me - iPad, Shopbot and Yahama keyboard - but he cant decided which is most important. So my question is "What about ME?"
I can give distance education in Ipads as well as excel if you need it.
Enjoy your new toy - Chrissy

I'm slowly figuring stuff out but it seems only after running for 10-15 minutes and it runs the battery down like 10% I don't seem to get more then a couple hours or more of off/on time...still figuring it out.:)

If you have an iPhone DONT use its charger on the iPad as its output is lower. Running say Tunein radio all day in the shop you should get 6 to 8 hours. The iPad is multi tasking and if you dont exit apps they remain running. To check this double click the "home button". This will bring up a row of app icons right across the bottom. Hold your finger down on the left most one until it starts "wiggling". The icons will all be wiggling at this point and have a red minus sign top left. Press on the minus sign of each in turn and they will disappear. Dont be alarmed if you have heaps as you have probably never exited anything ever!
Other culprits for high battery drain is GPS programs as these are running all the time. Any app with anything to do with knowing your location can also run 24/7. Tune in radio can be running in the background without you knowing. You can actually listen to it with the unit switched off. Same with all your MP3's. Turn off blue tooth in settings.
A good habit is to use the minus sign method as soon as you are finished with an app. The only problem with the iPad is you cant post piccies to the forum BUT it is fantastic for watching Vectric Tutorials right next to the bot. You could even get the Shopbot remote app then when you are watching your machine in the house as you have tea you can turn it off just by presing stop. A better method than having a 200 foot extension on your emergency button! Seriously I will be pinching your wireless video idea as soon as I can get permission from the "treasurer" to buy more gear. I want to rig ours up so that it rings the iPhone when we are away if some mongrel tries to steal the bot!

What is that cumbersome routine all about? To give us something to fiddle with?
Otherwise, iPad is a nice Yuppie toy.
The brilliant display saves it from being just another (too big) tablet
which of course is exactly what it is.. ;)
I now regret not having bought a Windoze mini-laptop (or a Kindle Fire)

You are worrying too much it takes several charges to ge the battery up to snuff. I don 't worry about closing apps unless things get glitchy. that can take weeks if you use a lot of apps. yes use the charger that came with it it also works with your phone. I use mine for games and such and even then I can get all day out of it. I leave wifi on all of the time. thats what allpe is good about consistancy. apps have buttons in the same locations for the most part and the back button is always in the left hand corner. just relax and enjoy it.

Dont know about the States but Apple stores in Australia have things called "Genius Bars" manned by super keen geeks. You just ring up and get a personal slot. Unlike other manufacturers this service is FREE forever and I think is why Apple is so huge in Oz. They have the same attitude as Shopbot and Yamaha to customers. You could always pop in your Learjet and come to one of Chrissies iPad workshops for motorhoming "oldies"! They must be good as she has never had a walkout and the workshops are for people that havent got one yet. She focuses on the benefits to the age group - how to get to hospital quickly - check access to a campsite by looking at the actual entrance in advance - checking how bad a dirt road is before committing - how to listen to your home radio station when out of state or overseas - intro to Skype and Facetime - a better bigger screen GPS with no map update fees ever - how to watch the ABC, BBC etc. - an intro to email - taking photos so that the campsite comes up on a map when you "forget" where it is - and of course heaps and heaps on craft!

The closest Apple store to me is about 90 miles away, BestBuy is just down the road a piece...
The main thing I want to figure out, since i'm going to be taking a train trip, is I want to put on my ipad several movies and tv shows to watch as i travel. I don't want to depend on netflicks or a connection on a moving train but have them stored on my HD. So i need to figure out how to convert them to a apple format then transfer them to the ipad.
I have itunes and diskaid but so far i can only see how to download OFF the ipad and not ON to it.
knight_toolworks
08-16-2012, 07:19 PM
You need to make sure the shows and movies are in the right format then import them into itunes. I use handbrake
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php/
use the ipad setting or I use appletv3 and they all work fine. it will convert your shows and then import them into iTunes and have movies sync on your ipad.

Steves advice is spot on. I'll probably get flamed but for $3.99 a month you can sign up to the BBC and dowload PAINLESSLY stuff like Top Gear, Yes Prime Minster, Judge Dean, Midsummer Murders, Spooks and of course Dr Who to learn about time travel. What sort of plan are you on? Are you using a Simm card?

i got handbrake and can convert but i can't seem to figure out how to transfer files from pc to ipad using itunes. When i open itunes on the ipad i see all kinds of stuff to buy but can't see any interface where i can choose files on the pc to transfer.
When i have itunes on the pc open i see all the video and audio files on my pc and i converted one file as a test and can see it within the itunes pgm on the pc
I can see under "devices" my ipad but it is greyed out and keeps on wanting to sync up and defaults because it can't and i don't want it to anyway.

in itunes use add to library in the menu and choose you folder the files are in and select them all. then iTunes will import them and if they are the right type you will see them under movies in itunes. then when you ipad is showing in itunes choose movies and setup sync in the way you want it.

I use a program called Cusoft to translate dvds to ipad/ipod format. From iTunes, goto menu, then import folder or file, and the program will catalog all acceptable formats in that file or folder. you can also tell iTunes to search your entire computer but that takes a while.

The huge advantage Apple has is the massive range of apps out there and this thread really highlights this. The iPad is such an intuitive device you simply dont need a manual to just use it. Being a dumb bum people just assume I can help them with their Android devices. Truth is I really struggle as they are not at all intuitive at present. Anyway there is yet another video player that works in the iPad and thats Azul but its poorer resolution however it does play anything you throw at it and relatively seamless. So Jack when something wont play a little box will come up with "open in". Some of the suggestions could be totally daft but just select Azul and away you go! Costs $1.99. If you want to buy apps cheaper a very good trick is to buy iTunes cards when they are on sale for at least 1/3rd off. Also a good way to avoid using a credit card although the iTunes store seems to be pretty secure. Dont forget Jack you could spend your whole train trip watching CNC videos. I love the German chair making units. Fascinating!

In actual fact there are more apps in the Android marketplace and they've been outselling Apple apps for over a year now.
Like most things in life it's what you're used to. I found the Android tablet I bought to be completely intuitive and found my way around in minutes. I had the same experience with my android phones.
Different strokes for different folks. I read the above posts about multitasking and video conversion and thought how complex it all sounded compared to Android. I have no doubt whatsoever that someone used to an iPad would think exactly the same if I described how Android does it.
Fascinating to see what Apple comes up with when they release a 7" pad. To me that's the perfect size.

Jack - on a more serious note you often mention tiny memory lapses and seniors moments as we do ourselves. A really understated feature of the iPad is the free app called "find my iphone". We were out with a group of motorhomers and went walking along a lonely beach an hour or so before sunset. One of the ladies wanted to pee so went up behind the beach. We realised she was missing about 30 minutes later. Her hubby then told us she had just been diagnosed with early dimenture/altzeimers. We didnt find her till almost 8pm. Now the point of this post Jack is if she had an iPhone in her pocket we could have found her even if she was unconcious. You just enter your password and it comes up with a map of the exact location. As you will probably eventually use your iPad for a bit of business you also have the option of locking and totally wipeing it remotely. I was helping fix a bushfire damaged fence, got home no phone! Got on the iPad and in seconds it showed me a map of where it was on the property. I was convinced! Dont get this if you mess with other girls as your wife can track your every move! Great though if your vehicle gets stolen!

Bob,
I saw that app you mention and enabled it, though i was confused in that if i lost my ipad i'd have to have an iphone to track it right? I only have the ipad.
This is still a bit confusing on the transfer thing Don i'll check out Air Drive.
Air drive seems to work pretty easily, although the way to find files once you have transferred is not very intuitive (although its probably me) in order to find the videos you have transferred you have to open air drive, they don't show up in the "videos" folder or how can i move them to say a "My Movies" folder?

Thats a nice easy one Jack! Just go to Settings on the home page, then General, then About. If you look down the list it tells you all about everything you have stored on the disk. Havent a clue how you would stick these in folders as I only ave 50 or so havent felt the need. My rule s dont learn more than you need to or your brain will burst. Apps like the BBC download their videos directly into the app. The same with magazines - they tend to go in a "library" inside the app. You could be maybe worrying tooooooo much Jack instead of just chilling and enjoying the thing?

Jack, the easiest way to get movies and music on the iPad is to load them into iTunes. Then sync your iPad to that. You can check which videos/songs you want by checking sync only checked songs. You do get a bit of the cloud for backing up but its not that much. You can also easily check the disc space on the iPad on the home screen in iTunes.

Having problems with my ipad. I lose about 20-25% of my battery life in an hour just doing manual stuff (no video watching) with all underlying apps turned off so they want me to bring it in and give me a new one. The only problem is i have about 10 gigs of movies and television shows i transferred and converted from my tivo along with probably 100 mp3's that i now need to try to transfer back to my pc.
I have Airdrive but i can't figure out how to transfer FROM the ipad TO the pc. I upgraded to Airdrive pro thinking that would give me the ability to transfer BOTH ways but if it does i can't see how?
Also tried Diskaid and that one has me discombobulated also, and iTunes forgetaboutit!
I have about 5 gigs of free backup space on icloud but don't want to have to buy more space just to backup this stuff and the original files from the pc i deleted already.
Also when i had the free airdrive i had a folder with all this stuff in it when you open up airdrive. Now that i upgraded to airdrive pro that folder is gone and i can't find those files although looking at my HD usage the files are still on the HD but where?
Bob Eustace
09-07-2012, 03:45 AM
Jack thats an easy one. Just plug your lead into the iPad and the other end into your PC. Open iTunes and do a "sync". It will all go across. Just do the reverse when you get the newbie. Truly the iPad is dead easy using the standard stuff. Best to avoid the newer fancy stuff and ONLY learn as much as you need to do the job!

part of the issue i have with sync'ing is that i have hundreds of various files, pictures, videos, mp3's and it would take hours to go thru and uncheck ALL or even go thru and find the several ones i wanted to reput on the ipad in several different folders. This is the issue i have with itunes, it lists all the various filrtypes and names but doesn't identify where they are on your pc HD.
Why can't i just take the files i want to put back on the pc and create a folder on my pc desktop named "Ipad backup" and transfer all my videos and music that i transferred via my airdrive pgm TO the ipad BACK to the ipad backup folder? Why can't i find the folder in the airdrive pgm now that i updated?
This seems very counter intuitive:confused:

Jack I just emailed you some Valium! To control what goes on the iPad all you do is keep that stuff only inside iTunes and only do full back ups and restores. This can take up to three hours as there are 6 steps. So when is the big train trip? It truly is a lovely system and works in reverse for piccies etc that you have added to the iPad. It all hapens seamlessly and totally worry free if yiu dont mess with ticking stuff.

Bob,
I appreciate your patience in answering my questions and i think i might have learned something about itunes and was able to "sync" my files, as it went thru 6 steps and took a while but for the life of me i cannot find where it sync'ed the files to my pc. I cannot find a folder where this would have been stored in, what is the default folder that is created for transfers TO the pc? I've looked everywhere!
Also i have 5 gig storage on iCloud, i did a backup, it shows i only have 940 megs left but when i log in to icloud i don't see any files that were supposed to be there?
I downloaded the icloud control panel for the pc and can log in and see "jacks ipad" but hiliting it does not give me the ability to see the content of the backup. How can i see the contents of that backup so i can make sure the files i want to keep are there?

Checkout SugarSync for the iPad. The iPad version is relatively new, and will allow syncing folders and files.

Either I don't know how to use these various apps or they are just not very intuitive. I know it's not a pc but i'd like to be able to view individual files so i can either upload or download back and forth. Most of these seem to be a one way (from pc to ipad) deal. I can't seem to just find files without finding them WITHIN a program, then i can only use that pgm to transfer (airdrive). Whats weird is that if it generates a different ip then what you transferred the files with when you loaded them, you CANNOT find them in the pgm. Uploading to my cloud storage now since i have to take this one in and replace it. I have no idea what it is uploading....

As long as your music is in the app on the front page called "MUSIC" it will continue to play with the lid shut. Could you check this otherwise you have messed with something in settings. Could you tell us if Tune in Radio still runs with the cover shut Jack? You realize though that ths feature can really backfire on you. Because i downloaded the mp3 files with Airdrive they are in a folder within the airdrive pgm which you have to start to see the files. To play them it brings up what looks like a video player to play the audio. You see a progress bar on a black background while music is playing. If you close case it all goes off.
I guess the question is can i transfer them to this "music" folder you talk about, and how?
FYI- I went out and bought the "Tivo Stream" and although it was $129.00 ($90.00 to me with bonus points i had) I synched it up to my tivo and downloaded some episodes of American Chopper, Person of Interest, a couple old movies, and other stuff onto my ipad. There was no conversion necessary and every 1 hour takes about 1 gig in space for HD quality.
It will also play anything i have on my Tivo at home via wifi on my ipad even if i'm 1000 miles away. I got my netflix also set up. I have my surveillance system all hooked up so i can check all cameras.
The thing is, what the heck am i going to use all this for once i get back from this trip?

Jack, assume you are on your trip because you have gone all quiet! An app called Jasmine, made in Australia is getting rave reviews and zero moans and it looks like it could do all the things you want video and audio wise.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jasmine-youtube-client/id554937050?mt=8
Anyway its free but a 6.3mb download and as yet no ads!

Well Bob I had previously gotten some Sherlock Holmes and Errol Flynn movies and used handbrake to convert then airdrive to transfer and that took hours and hours but Tivo came out with "The Stream" a $129.00 device and combined with the tivo ipad app all i had to do was record tv shows or movies and then i could transfer them over to the ipad (15 min transfer time for 1 hour movie) at about 500 megs for HD.
I transferred a few episodes of American Chopper and Person of Interest and some old b/w movies and on the trip there and back watched alot of that. You could also start to record a show and stream it to your ipad via either wifi or cellular data. I watched some netflix going down the tracks that way and monitored the forum here too.
So all in all i think because of the tivo app it was successful. I also had hook up surveillance cameras and could check on things back here while riding the rails or wherever i was which was reassuring.
Now i have to figure out what the heck to use it for now that i'm back from the trip. I'll be downloading the shopbot app next.:D

Surprised it took so long with Handbrake. I convert movies all the time using it for my Nexus 7 and the whole process takes about 15 minutes including copying the movie over.

It is entirely possible, and more likely probable, that i am using the wrong settings and not doing it correctly. However since i have the tivo stream i won't need to do it using the manual method anymore anyway.
Since i had a 3-4 hour layover I enjoyed watching some movies in the train station lounge.:D
