hey everyone,
i'm trying to find some small bits(ballnose, endmills, etc.) and after looking on here i found cuttingtoolsource.com. i would like to order a few bits, however, after talking to the salesman, i discovered that all the bits from
1/8th" on down have an 1/8th" shank. my shopbot came with the 1/4" and 1/2" collets(i got the porter cable router, not the spindle). i have looked online and have been unable to locate a collet for these. what does everyone else use? do i need a collet, or should i find some bits that have a 1/4" shank?
thanks,
brian

If you have a spindle, buy the 1/8" collet from ShopBot. Just pick up the phone and call.
If you have a router, like a Porter Cable, a Stubby Collet Chuck - Like the 308-0018 (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PARTPG=INLMKD&PMPXNO=8708664&PMAKA=308-0018) from www.Use-Enco.com (http://www.Use-Enco.com) is the right tool for the job. Make sure you get the 1/8" ER11 collet and associated wrenches. It fits into your existing 1/2" collet.
The inserts like you show from Lee Valley, are OK in a pinch, but I never recommend them for CNC duty.

Yep, that would be what you need to set yourself up with for 1/8". You might want to consider getting the kit right up above that one. It has all the same parts plus the 1/4" collet. I use the 1/4" collet more often than the 1/8".

Thanks brad, the router came with a 1/4 & 1/2" collets already. Is there any need to get this one as well?

I would get the one with all three 1/8 1/4 1/2 collets that way you use the spanner wrench on them all and the are supposed to be better quality. You have the choice of the ultra precision for $117.95 or the deluxe for $87.95. sooner or later you will have to replace the collet somyou may as well get everything now and save time and money.
