View Full Version : What size rack on my PR?

I'm wanting to replace my PR gantry, which will require installing a new rack gear. In order to use my existing PR motor and pinion gear, I'd like to use the same size rack gear.

Can someone tell me what size rack the PR's used? Or give me some info on how to determine what size rack I have?

Is it just a matter of counting teeth per inch? What about the angle and depth, all that sorta stuff?

Thanks in advance!

Wayne,
Measure the width of the teeth, up and down. (from top of letter '|' shaped tooth to bottom ||||||, not left to right) It should be 3/8", but could also be 1/2". The rack specs are 20° pitch & 14.5° pressure angle. Your rack was most likely made by Boston Gear. You can buy them directly from ShopBot and be sure to get new pinions while you are at it.

Hah! Perfect!

Thanks, Brady. I'll just order one from Shopbot, and pick up a couple pinions at the same time.

You always have the right answer, Brady, and quick. Thanks so much.
