Cutting out material from around letters

I am doing a sign that i need to cut out material in a box around the letters..
when I do it with the pocket tool path and do offset the letters look rough how do i correct that.

I have done pocket around letters without an offset and they came out clean.

what did you do... I end up with it being sort of jagged either way I did it.

are you using a raster cut or offset cut I use the offset to get clean letters.
