Attached are a couple pictures of our newest sign. We recently made this cedar sign for our township. Its dimentions are 6' x 4' for the sign and appr. 8' wide with the posts. There will be secondary signs made to hang below this main sign to announce upcoming events i.e. elections, meetings, and etc. All signs are 2" western red cedar laminated with West epoxy and coated with Sikkens log and siding stain.

Thanks Kurt. I am surprised you don't have it. What do people make decks from? Bob

Kurt,

Beautiful blanks, well assembled, ready to cut.....
You can usually order them through most sign supply houses. Harbor Sales might even carry them.

Hi Bob, I really like the sign and wondering about your finishing sequence? Sikkens or paint first? Any tips? What is your masking technique? I have mostly used Sikkens Cetol 1 how does it compare to log and siding.

Dan;
Thanks for your nice comments. I love working with real wood for my signs.
I use sikkens log and siding exclusively for my cedar signs. There are 3 coats applied and I put them on just before I leave each evening because of the smell. The 3rd coat of sikkens leaves a nice glossy surface that your mask will adhere to very well. The trees are 3 dimensional and are applied to the sign with 3M 5200 adhesive after painting them. I paint with latex house paint and it can be put on over the sikkens if needed. I have found that silicone caulk does not hold through severe weather changes.

Hi Bob, thanks for sharing your experience. I will have to try log an siding after I finish my current current gallon of certol. That is a great idea to apply the 3D components after painting. Do you mask or freehand your letters?

I generally mask whenever I can as I get a cleaner look. Sikkens also has a maintainence coat product that can refresh the log and siding after a few years.

I just cut a sign/plaque in 3-d to send to my favorite vet support group in Texas, which was cut in black walnut. To my understanding the sign will be hung outside but under an over hang, so no sun but Texas humidity.
My thoughts are to do it in Sikkens. But here is my question. I have some lettering that needs to be stained. First i need to seal the lettering to prevent bleeding. Here is the question: Will the sikkens adhere properly to the sealer outside of the lettering or does it need to be totally sanded away? If it will adhere will it blend in or will it look splotchy?
I have used the log and siding on a black walnut v-carved sign and it turned out great. I like the stuff, but it will burn your eyes.

Sikkens is made to go on raw wood, and not on top of other finishes.

I hate reading directions. But i have sikkens all over my house and it went on raw wood and I have a 100 percent logo sided home. Now that said we are talking about pine vs black walnut and cetrol vs log and siding. I agree with that fact that it does not play well with others.

Any thoughts on dyeing sikkens?
