every time I reset it I forget how to get the movement amount down to a reasonable amount. I thought it was vd keypad fixed distance but that does nothing.

If you are talking about Fixed mode in keyboard mode, just press the D key or click on the Fixed button. Then type in the distance in the textbox. Every time you hit a key, the tool will move that distance. Esc to get out of it.

that method works but it used to be you could set it and it would always have a fixed amount of movement. just easier then having to set the fixed amount each time. but that may have gone away with the older software I was using.

If you type in the amount, it will always be that amount until you change it or reset to OEM defaults.

Steve,
I'm not near my machine today and can't get a picture of the keypad on my home/office computer in preview, but take a look at this thread...http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14555... and you'll see a picture of the keypad. If you click the 'Fixed' button or hit the 'd' key on your keyboard with the keypad open, a little window will show and you can enter a value for the fixed move amount there. Anytime you click on fixed, that value will show and that's how much the machine will move with each press of the arrow keys.
You can also enter that value in the fill-in sheet for VD (Display Values).
Hope that's what you're thinking of.

yes there is the fixed move but it requires turning it on and off. There used to be a setting that did the same thing always. but I think that setting is gone now.

Strange that Keypad Fixed Distance isn't working for you. As you say it must be a version issue or something.
I've got mine set to 10mm and with the shift key it drops down to 1mm. I have both joystick buttons on the Rumblepad set to D to engage it and the top right button for shift. Makes sneaking up on things a breeze, couldn't do without it.

it does not work if you use v d and set it there. it works if you kit k then d and put it in. I think the software changed to only use it if you turn it on. Not too big of a deal just an extra key.

after looking what I am after is to have the bot stop when I let up on the key. the fixed distance requires you to tap the key till you get in the right place. this is the setting I thought I wanted the fixed distance but it is not.

The VD is only to set the unit of measurements that it moves in "inches" not "millimeters".
Based on your description i'm not clear on what your problem is? Are you saying that when you tell it to move say 12", that it moves something different?
Maybe what you want is under VR or VU the VU values will depend on the model you have.

When you open up Keyboard mode with the K key, press the D key. Press D or Esc to get out of that mode.
The Fixed mode setting in VD is redundant. You can set it there or in the keypad. EITHER WAY you still have to press the D key or click on the Fixed button to activate fixed mode.
I don't remember a setting that does what you are talking about, but it's not like you are going to break a nail because you have to press the D key...

when I let up on the arrow key I want the bot to stop in as little distance as possible. Now I know I will need the fixed distance some too. but right now Say I am using the pen and I need to zero it. I tap the key and sometimes I get 1/4" and sometimes less or more. same with if I am using the laser to find a spot. If I let up on the key the machine takes too far to stop. fixed distance is a hassle as you to tap the key for each movement increment. But I think the software does not have that setting anymore right?

I don't think it is a setting...The later versions of the software don't 'stop on a dime' with the keypad like earlier versions - which absolutely drives me nuts. I am running 3.6.18 (I think) for this very reason & it has been rock solid for my machine. I think it is one of the last versions where it doesn't overshoot & bury the bit when you try to nudge the Z down with the keypad. Your mileage may vary...

Steve, I'm not sure how much difference it makes on the tail end of a keyboard move/jog, but the keyboard ramp rate setting makes keyboard moves and jogs a bit more responsive. I drop it down to .12 to make it less mushy in the X and Y, but I'm not sure how much it helps the Z stop sooner upon button release.
I think it was there in the latest release, but not sure. I'm running the beta so it's possible your version doesn't have it. I know that the issue you're describing isn't as pronounced in the beta as it was in some of the past versions.

I used the keyboard and a combo of fixed to get what I wanted. what I notice is if you tap the key when not using fixed the bot stops at random distances.
