View Full Version : Wavy Scarf cutter
Great application - just seems too aggressive - here's what I've encountered:
3/4" material, input 3/4" joint length for 6.5" wide stock
6 steps input for pass depth = 1/8" cut per pass.
Using 1/4" bit
Holy cow does that thing fly through the cut!
Problem:
First pass is full depth through 3/4" material = broken bit
Is there a setting I'm missing?
Jeff
what is the feed speed? and spindle speed?

you must have some setting incorrect because I don't think it is supposed to cut a full 3/4 cut at all anywhere. I think it should start from the top and progress down instead of cutting a full cut and moving up. Can you post a screencap of your settings?
Gene,
Just completed successful cuts on actual workpieces. Using scrap, I floundered my way through the two topics you just mentioned. I'm so accustomed to part files pre-determining these factors, it took me a bit(literally!) to realize I had to manually drop back feed rates.
- 5ips through solid hardwood is a recipie for the disaster I was experiencing!:o
Still, surprises me that it is set up for a full depth first pass. In practice, I was deliberately holding workpiece short of cut line and running file several times to sneak up on final cut, which may still be employed in future runs of this handy file.
In the end, I throttled back to 1 ips and got nice, clean controlled cuts in 3/4" red oak.
Thanks for the help, Gene!
jeff
Jack -
Not sure how to produce a "screen cap":o
Can you give me a clue?
I would like to have you take a look. Again, I was able to successfully produce the joint, but I am concerned about that big bite I've inadvertently set it up to take...
Thanks Jack!

Some keyboards have a "prnt screen" key that would capture whats on your screen. I have a small app i got from download.com or tucows.com, there are several out there. Just do a google search for "screen capture utility" and anything you have on your screen would be made into a jpg.
I have not used this utility so i'm unfamiliar with how you set it up but my vague understanging is that it basically cuts graduated wavy "stairstep" cuts incrementally from high side to low side.
What it sounded like to me was that it was cutting first on the low side and a deep cut to the high side and shallower cuts which is opposite of the way I would think it would do...that was why i wanted to see your settings:confused:
But it sounds like Gene got you set up correctly...
