My ole pappy has this wood lathe that is about 4 feet long has a new motor on it and everything, it is kinda old, but could a wood lathe be turned into an indexer easily?

It depends on what you call easy... a number of botters have done just that! Browse the indexer section. You won't be needing that new motor however...
