I do a fair number of dining room tables in my business. I have an order for a large, maple, double-pedastal base style dining table coming up. Generally I do a built up turned column but for this one, the couple wanted a squared off one.

Based on a photo they showed me, I did this up in Aspire with a 2 rail sweep. I am cutting the "panels" from full 2" thick hard maple, 18" long by 8" wide. After I mitre them on the saw, I will glue them up with loose tenons and have a strong, hollow colum that I can attach the top stretcher/base to as well as the feet at the bottom end (more photos when I get there).

I roughed out the panels with a 1/2" end mill (about 10 minutes each) and finished them up with a 1/2" ball end bit, with a 10% step over, 240 IPM and 11,000 rpm (about 40 minutes). Really good finish.

The ends have to be trimmed yet, but this is what I got done today while sanding doors for another job. (yes it is a holiday here for Good Friday, but I work for myself so there isnt any holidays).

I also have done the files for the legs/feet. Hope to get them done soon and will post a few pics of the completed base.

I guess the trick is getting the miters correct.....seems to be no problem for you, excellent work!:D

The miters are easy - the extra 1" left on either end at full thickness guide along my extended table saw fence. My 5hp motor and a good blade cut easily and cleanly through the hard maple. The photo shows them just sitting there - they are not glued yet.

That looks like the beginning of a BIG table!

Yeah its not small... it will be 46" by 80" closed, with two 22" or 24" leafs. So the base needs to be substantial...

The customer (who I have worked for in the past - did their custom kitchen and some bedroom furniture) has a large dining area, longer than the average home. And a large family.

I am supposed to do a matching hutch and buffet after the table is done.

Outstanding start for the table. I've got a nightmare 48x24ft 3 section natural black slate/live edge black walnut slab table on the books. We'll start soon.

Not at all Jack... Just regular people :) They just appreciate good quality furniture, and save up to invest in something decent that will last them.

Wow..very nice work on the table feet. These look simple and elegant. I am also surprized how fine the miter cuts are. It seems a solid wood. Now really interesting to see the Table top? Are u going to make inlays on it are keep it simple?

I'm working on about 4or5 various things for different customers... The table might be done next week, or shortly after. I am preparing for a trade show next week as well so time has been tight!

Will post pics when it's done and in the finishing process.

Back on working on the table... should be done next week. Been busy with other things

I have to fit the leafs, and then just final sanding and off to finishing. Here is one of the chairs that will go with the set. I bought the chair frames unfinished in this case, without seats. I made the seats and sanded/finished them. They are made in Toronto, right here in ON Canada, so they are top notch.

Thanks Kevin. Although I have a lot to say in the design, it was really the customer who showed me photos of tables they liked and the overall design. I just did my take on it.

Will post pics of the finished table - should be done by the end of next week if all goes well :)

Mike I'm using currently two identical systems, one for clear and one for coloured lacquers. Both pressure fed Graco HVLP Airpro guns and Binks 2 gallon pressure pots with dual regulators. I spray at about 35 psi gun pressure and 12 psi fluid pressure.

Andrew, Do you do your own re-saw, the bookmatching on the one leg is beautiful, couldn't see the top well enough to see if you are using same tree. The Amish up north of here do a lot of live edge black walnut out of pretty much a one man hand tool shop,so they spend a lot of time matching woods. Nice to see botters doing the same.

No but all 4 sides came from one plank. I buy my lumber kiln dried, rough sawn - but I do not get logs and resaw/dry etc.

All that grows up where I live is black spruce and other evergreens, and a few poplar and birch. No hardwood forests for hundreds of miles.

Thanks Ron! If anyone is interested in the files - I'd share them no problem. I have the pedastal face file (3D) and the leg outline - both in Aspire 3.5. Just shoot me your email.

Andrew,
Out of curiosity, if you don't mind sharing, what did you charge for the table and the chairs? Whatever it was, it wasn't enough:eek:

Dad obviously taught you well...he should be proud:D

Chairs are $365/pc
Table was $2850.

$5770 + tax for the set, delivered and set up. Ill even eat the first meal off of it if they want :)

I hope my father is proud of me. All my years (from grade 8 on through high school, and my university years) I was home working for him in the summer he never pushed me or even suggested I go into woodworking. He let me make that decision on my own. After doing three years of maths and sciences at university, I decided I had enough of not using my hands as well as my brain, and I went to college for three more years for woodworking. Only after I had made that decision did he tell me he thought it was a good idea. :)

One thing I will say, it will take me 20 more years before I think I will be at his level of creativity, design and engineering, etc. He is truly a master woodworker. I am still a LONG way off from considering myself on his level, IMO. But I try every job to get better.

Very Very beautiful work Andrew. I am sure your dad is saying "that's my boy". I am sure others will agree with me you are years or decades ahead of most of us here. Glad to see you have a client base that appreciates and is willing to have custom furniture built. Very hard these days. Most just look at price and aren't bothered by the 4 year throw away **** big box stores sell.
Hey I am only a good days drive from your place....bit of a commute but if you need help I will be on the way.
Awesome job again and for goodness sake could you at least toss some sawdust around the floor for your pictures....your making the rest of us feel like slobs .......lol :)

Glen,
I will make it down to see your place some time.. I need to make a trip to visit Stephen Cohrs as well. Actually, if you want, I would give you my aspire files for the "amp cradles" - and you can see about making them for him VS me as the freight to ship kills the deal for both of us.

As for the shop being clean, I honestly have OCD, and I cannot work in a messy environment. I see a counsellor from time to time as not for it to get out of hand... some days when I get high anxiety, I calm my nerves by cleaning up and straightening things out. It is some days a bit of a curse... but I deal with it.

And, Ive been meaning to shoot you a PM but keep forgetting. I need some smaller diameter bits and some tapered ball ends for 3D.. shoot me a message or email and I can tell you what I want to order.
