Here is why i buy rough lumber instead of going to a lumber company
I buy my lumber by the board foot. ( bf is thickness times widht times lenght divided by 144.) when buying at a lumber company you pay for the wood to be planned and sized to standard sizes and thick ness... When I buy 4/4 (four quarter) i am getting a board that is 1 inch thick. When i buy a 1 inch board at a lumber company i get a board that is 3/4 inch thick..
They removed 1/4 of wood. To make it smooth.
AT THE SAW MILL I CAN BUY SHORTS THAT ARE FAS GRADE AT A MUCH CHEAPER PRICE... SHORTS ARE NORMALLY 4 FOOT IN LENGHT...
I CAN ALSO BUY SELECTS WHICH IS 6 FOOT LONG AT A CHEAPER PRICE.
I may not plann the wood down at all. Especially if I am slicing the wood.
If I am slicing i have to sand the saw marks out.. If it will be the finished product I will plann the wood to the size I need.
When I buy wood at the saw mill that is kiln dried. I am buying it cheaper, even if I plann it to size. Thus saving money.
I can also buy rough in different grades, at lumber store it is only one grade.
I normally get FAS (furnature grade.) but I can get by with number 1 common or #2 common if I want to... However I prefer FAS ( no knots to deal with.)
Every person that the wood passes thru adds price to the board.. IF I did not have to have a planner I WOULD BUY FROM A LUMBER however I am paying more..Here is a rough lumber price sheet.
One thing I really miss since moving from OH to WA is the ability to buy my domestic lumber direct from sawmills. :( Saved me tons of money. For most domestics I now have to go to a wholesaler nearby.
If I want pine, cedar or fir I can go to local mills and buy.
Having to use wholesalers for most domestics has made it more expensive to do projects.

i get some maple from wa state... I get a lot of burls from around seatle area... Check around i think you will find some that has domestic wood.
I have a uncle in the seatle area that brings me in a lot of birds eye when he flies in... The burl's i have shipped to me.
You're right Eugene. Big leaf maple is available thru mills on the west coast of WA and OR but not in eastern WA. Same with Alder.
Unless you take a trip to the west you are stuck with dealing with wholesalers. I don't take that many trips west as I haven't had enough big jobs to justify the trip to buy direct. Also, I don't have the room to store that much lumber.
Now, if your project plans (I am on the list to purchase from you) start to take off, I will look into establishing retailers on both sides of the state of Washington as well as Idaho, Montana and Oregon. At that point I will be able to justify taking my 28' trailer with me and loading it up.

it hard to keep track of who has ordered here. That is why i asked everyone to send me a e-mail... Need it so i can track them. I have a file to save their e-mail address to so that when they are ready i can contact them... Trying to go thru all the messages here is too hard. One file has everyone and with their e-mail i can tell if i have a dbl order ..
Plus as they pay they get sent a copy via e-mail and one via post office.
