HTC carbide bits from "Carbide-end-mill-store" (http://www.the-carbide-end-mill-store.com/m5/170-2256--1-4-square-end-mill-extra-long-htc-170-2256-2-flute-gp-30-uncoated.html), e.g. 1/4" x 6" long for $20. They have flat and ball end versions.

I noticed such long bits flex a lot and make a hell of a racket machining wood.

i buy a lot from BAM carbide, they are small and will make custom lengths for you if you ask them.
