I am carving corian, which I want to paint with modern masters gold. My questions are;
1. Do I have to prime the corian before painting?
2. Will I get as much sheen with the modern masters gold by thinning and spraying or should I brush?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bob
Bob,
I have no experience with Corian but use MM Gold on a regular basis. My thoughts go like this. There are new adhesion promoters out like “Stix” and “Bull Frog” that should work fine. I'd bet it wouldn't fair too well with something like this.
Pharo's Gold is my choice but it looks better when applied over a slight texture. This painlt should not be applied smooth. Glob it on for the best gold look. To get your brilliance up it's best to apply an undercoat of Cadium Light acrylic artists paint. That will bring the color up one full step.
For exterior use it should be coated out MM UV Clear.

Thanks Joe. I am using M/M me194 iridescent sheer. Is pharo gold also M/M or some other manufacturer?
I contacted M/M as their website was not clear about coating over other paint. They have specific primers which are approved for the sheer paint but nothing about painting over another paint on their website. According to Joe in tech support the M/M sheer should only be applied over flat latex or acrylic paint. If no one has any practical experience with this I will just follow tech supports advise. Bob
That's right it will stick to flat latex. But how does latex primer stick to plastic without an adhesion promoter?
Do try a test with a little texture. It makes the gold flash.
Pharo's Gold is a MM product. The iridescent is translucent. Hence the advantage of a bright yellow undercoat.
Their gold is like rubber. I like it for a base coat of 23K.
Good luck.

Joe;
Thanks for the reply and reminder to test adhesion of the primer also. This corian carves and finishes great. I am going to test changing most of my lettering to that instead of PVC. Actually in this case I had done the testing and got great results on the rough side of the corian (I did not test the smooth side so it might be fine also). The primer was Zinsser 123 which was recommended on the Modern Masters website. I talked to M/M tech support to discuss painting the primer. They said I had to use a flat exterior latex since there was poor adhesion to oil based or glossy paints. I put on a moss green flat exterior latex and then stippled the M/M 194 gold over that with about 85% coverage so a little green would show through the gold. I am very happy with the color and the stippling added enough texture to look real good IMO. Next time I will try your texturing as that sounds like a great look. I will put a couple pics up when I get my camera back.
