Well guys I decided to try out one of these chinese spindles on ebay. I got a unit that another shopbotter suggested to try. It seems to work ok when doing bench testing. The only thing I am having issue with is changing the rpm of the spindle. Seems I can only do this by changing the hz setting. Any guys that have these units care to chime in and give some info on setup, tip and tricks?

That's how you change the speed on all the 3-phase router spindles I'm aware of(Chinese, German, and Italian).

You use the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) to vary the frequency of the voltage sent to the spindle. The VFD is also called an inverter by some. Its both. It takes 50-60Hz AC input, changes it to DC, then creates 3 phase AC at the frequency you set.

On some controllers you can program the information it displays. Check the manual. You may be able to change it so that it displays rpm's.

Or you can install a 10k pot switch.

One error in that post. its states that pd011 has to be set for the fan to operate, the fan is mounted on the end of the spindle shaft and runs when the spindle turns, One of the main problems that occur with this spindle is when first turned on it runs backwards causing the fan to be unscrewed from the shaft.

Also most of the 3 and 4kw air cooled spindles are 300hz 18000 rpm instead of 400hz 24000 rpm. And rpm = Hz x 60 (300 x 60 = 18000) (400 x 60 = 24000)
