I just recently got one of these Woodpecker Saw Gauges (http://www.woodpeck.com/sawgauge.html). I traded some cigars for it, actually. :)
This morning, in half an hour, I set my blade at a little under .001" of the miter slot and set the fence dead on. I had been at -.006 and -.01 using my caveman methods, and I kept getting tails on my long rips.
The sawstop only has 4 deck bolts and then the deck swivels on a front pivot. Two set screws under the back of the table drive the rear of the top left or right. So it's a really easy setup to adjust.
I had my wife come out and watch the dial indicator while I tweaked things in, and she helped me keep my lefts and rights straight. :)
70 bucks is a pretty steep price for a dial indicator, but this thing worked so well I really feel it was worth it. It's very well made, universal, and has a nice case to keep it in good shape. I'll probably only use it a few times in my lifetime, but it'll be handy to check new blades and watch that my table stays put when the seasons change.
Quite a neat little tool.
