This piece actually began while shopping at IKEA. I really like that store. In the kitchen cabinet area of on the second floor, noticed some fir shelf material. The shelves are 1/2" thick glued up stock. They are only $5.00 ea. Glued up two slabs as when carving something that thin tends to warp. This file is an STL and imported into Aspire 4. Roughing pass with a .25 endmill. Finishing pass was with a .125 ballnose with a 10% step over. After the milling, followed up with 120 grit flap sander on a battery powered drill. It only took a light pass in the areas of end grain. Total sanding time was maybe 10 minutes. Primed with acrylic white trim paint, then brushed on 2 coats of Modern Masters Metal Effects Bronze. Immediately after the second coat as it was still wet, sprayed a blue acid patina. Next morning, buffed with a green Scotch-brite pad to remove the extra patina dust and polished the areas that did not get covered with the sprayed acid. The combination of the patina and bronze sure gives the appearance of metal. A couple of co-workers asked where I bought the bronze casting? Guess the look is effective.

I like that effect. I recall Bill was demo'ing some sculpt Nouveau and had this piece that looked like aged copper and i picked it up and it was foam! That was a weird sensation because i expected it to be a heavy object. Very cool:cool:

Bill is who turned me on to this type of finishing. Also completed a EPS foam carving and used the Modern Master's metal effects copper. You are correct, I like watching people first touch the piece. Then their eyes open big when they pick it up and about throw it across the room.

I like this file better as it has more detail. The price was right as well. Set it up in Aspire easily. Set it up on 2" stock approx 24x48. Now this is just the CAD work as I not cut it yet. In the software, I made the model 1.75" tall. Just ran a finishing .125 ballnose and cutout .25 endmill tool paths only. No rough cut as I was impatient to see what it would look like on the screen. The computer states 14 hours and 21 mins. total time without roughing. Saved the picture and it looks great on the screen.
