I recently had to replace my Y motor on my 2010 PRS Alpha I purchased due to a wobbly shaft on the ASM98AA-T7.2 gearbox. I purchased the new unit direct from Oriental Motor. I was wondering if anyone has a motor that doesn't work but has a good gearbox I might purchase. I thought about possibly using it for an indexer. Just a shot in the dark.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark...
As I understand it, DIY gearbox swap outs are not possible... special tools/setups are required. If this is wrong information, somebody please correct me!

You can swap out the gearbox & even take it apart to regrease and fiddle with backlash adjustment. I would not advise it though, unless it is a spare and you like to tinker. You can get a brand new motor for $400 with a fresh gearbox on it, so why bother?

After I discovered the wobble in the gearbox I spoke with SB tech support and was instructed how to take it off and possibly adjust the backlash. I wouldn't go as far as taking the gearbox apart, but it seemed easy enough to separate it from the motor. I just thought if someone had a smoked motor but the gearbox was OK it just might save a couple bucks and not waste the motor. Could the gearboxless motor be fitted with a timing belt and pulleys to obtain the proper ratio for an indexer. I know a new one is just $400 since I just bought one (and thank you Brady for your advise), just seemed like a waste.

It's a win-win Mark. You win by following Brady's advise plus you have the possibility of winning again if someone offers you a sweatheart deal on a used stepper where you can tinker away with no real risk and not much invested in having a backup assembly.
Taking that a "step" further (pun intended), because there is likely a LOT more used alpha type steppers around off upgraded 1:1 PRT's, you might also ask the question from tech support and Brady their thoughts on whether or not the higher torque on these 1:1 motors would chew up your gearbox.
