I had to cut a simple link (a rounded bar with a hole at each end) from 3/4" Baltic birch and reduce the thickness of the material to 0.625". Normally I would have used a mortising bit to get a smooth surface on the 0.625" face. Instead, I used the compression bit since it was going to do the rest of the cutting.
By far the smoothest part of the finished piece is the surface that the compression bit created! I wouldn't expect all compression bits to work well in this application but mine (from BAM Carbide) did and it eliminated a tool change.
