Re-grind bit end

A few of my projects require pockets cut into laminated maple. Always cut with a .5 ball nose. I occasionally get some chipping on the surface (even if a very shallow "starter" pass is used).
This got me thinking, why not down cut? Problem is I've yet to locate a downcut ball nose.

Has anyone had experience having a bit's profile reground? Durability issues? Finish issues? etc..

why not try a down spiral end mill to break the surface. or a small 1/8 inch bit to break surface first. Re-grooving a bit would be impossible.

I've used that technique before, but it this case it'd require too many tool changes.

Just did a bit of thinking. A downcut ball nose may not work at all....
