My son wants me to build him a bar and i have one in my basement that i've only used to pile **** on since i don't drink and i was going to take the crappy beadboard off the front and make some cabinets below (since this will now sit against the wall, no walk behind) but I don't know anything about certain things like where the best location for a wine refrigerator is, what you might need to store, optimal height and width of cabinets for certain types of bottles, ect?

Also i wanted to make an upper cabinet with glass doors and wondered about optimal space from bar surface to bottom of cabinets for bottle storage and whether you need to make room for wine glass racks to hang glasses and wine racks, under cabinet lighting?

I'm doing my research on styles and certain designs but it isn't going to give me the clearance answers i asked about above and thought any of you who may have made something like this would have that info?

The way it sits now it is 100 long x 28 deep x 43 tall. That seems like it would be ok if you were sitting on a barstool. When standing at it, it is "bent elbow" height.
With a cabinet above and it being 28" deep would you normally stand or sit at a bar that was against the wall? I don't want cabinets staring you in the face if you are standing/sitting at it.

The pictures make it look like the top is messed up but it is in great shape, no scratches just gunky.
I want to make some columns for the corners of the bottom front of the bar and columns under the cabinet.
I would like to make the front of the bar out of walnut but don't think i have enough. I have plenty of poplar but not sure if that is good for a bar, i think a darker wood might be better?

As i go back and measure and mull it over i might talk him into having it out from the wall. With a 3 foot walk behind space and it only being 28" deep that would only be 64" from the wall.
The question i have is how deep are cabinets for wine, liquor bottles and how much "walk behind" space is average?

Jack you have cnc with a lathe ,To use a headboard would be well lets not go there

Height should be 42 but make 2 levels one at 34 to answer how deep if you are going to put a fridge there min 24 deep for lower

If you end up having a walk through counter don't tip it up but rather DOWN. Looks way nicer, way less tricky to make a safe tipping action. Use pneumatic strut hidden behind back splash and or just below counter to simple steel L bracket and simple latch below at strike edge and as simple as door hinges and it holds itself secure when open, use right strut strength to get from slight positive lift to zero weight balance.
Good Luck,
Steve
