This is strange. Whenever i go to this forum now i click on a post like in pic 1 and this popup banner slides out and compresses the page. I have to click the X on it to close it, then when i go to a next page it repeats. Annoying as heck.

The only thing i have downloaded and installed lately is a windows automatic update and i did download and install Gimp from the official site. It did have some check marks i undid for installing some addons and i suspect that is where it is coming from.

Curiously when i first clicked my shopbot forum link it did popup a "talkshopbot survey" which i clicked off and didn't open. What strange is that when i go to any other webpage other then this forum that popup does not come out.

It's getting curiouser and curiouser!
Where can i go to 1) see what other pgms/services are running and kill them
2)I forgot what the second thing was......does that happen to anyone else?

Jack, Control/alt/del- Task manager? Had the same thing with a new laptop and old design tower- thought it was new laptop at first. After doing what Brady said-if still problems.Eugene,
You need to start your computer in safe mode with networking. To do this:
1. Push power button to turn on computer
2. As soon as you do that start hitting the F8 button.
3. The computer will be in DOS mode and will offer options. The first is safe mode. The second is safe mode with networking.
Choose safe mode with networking.
It may ask what operating system you want to boot after that. Only one should be listed and that is what you choose.
Once the computer boots, the icons will be bigger and it will tell you its in safe mode. This is o.k. From here, you want to install
malwarebytes. Just go to a google page and type it in. Once you install it, update and run it. After it's complete check all items found
and remove them. Restart the computer in safe mode with networking AGAIN. Once the operating system is up in safe mode, download
and install superantispyware. Do this from a google search as well. Run it and remove all items it finds. Should take care of your problem.
The only reason it's running slow is because of the viruses. Putting the computer in safe mode doesn't allow the viruses to load and you should see increased internet speed.

The virus shows up as a dox/rovnix.v and win32/rovnix.gen!b
Be sure to check your system real good.

Are you still finding malware/viruses when you scan your system? I find, whenever I'm taking care of issues on other peoples systems, that most often the 123 punch of superantispyware, Ad-Aware, and Malwarebytes run in safe mode often does the trick. Sometimes with a really sticky infection you have to go a whole lot further.

Multiple antivirus tools do conflict. I normally download all 3, then reboot into safe mode, and run each one 1 at a time. Start with superantispyware, install, run through a full scan, clean out the bad stuff, and uninstall. Then install Ad-Aware, and do the same steps… Install, run through a full scan, clean out the bad stuff, and uninstall. Depending on the virus/malware you've picked up, you can Google them on another computer, and figure out the necessary extra steps to take.

Sometimes if the computer is too badly infected it's less work to just format, reinstall, and start from scratch. Probably not something you want to hear, but before I spend days cleaning something out that I might not ever fully get I just completely rebuild the hard drive from scratch.
Found a ton of stuff- all better now-fingers crossed.

Jack, stuff after Eugenes computer guy is from a Quad whose life is now working on computers for others. Mine had "slows" BAD. Probably cloud back-up like Brady mentioned wouldn't be bad, compared to cleaning multiple computers. Hope Brady fixed it.

Scott,
I have microsoft security essentials and Mcaffee would either of them be any better then what you recommend? I'm not sure it's a good idea to install all these antivirus pgms:confused:

i did go to msconfig and unchecked several things i was sure was ok to not have running. Anything i didn't recognize i left alone.

also something i have had on my computer for a long time is called "start up monitor". Whenever anything installs itself within any program that tells it to start up when you start up your computer it flashes a message and asks you if you want to allow this to run at startup. If you don't it won't allow it to install.

Jack, I was running Security Essentials and AVG free at the time. My Guy Mike said do the F8 thing at boot after downloading his 3, safe mode with networking like Eugenes guy recommended then install the super spyware one and let it update and set for full scan of everything(I popped 2 thumbdrives in at the same time and it found stuff on both). Delete all stuff it finds. UNINSTALL. Reboot the same F8 safe with networking way and install Malwarebytes update/complete scan/delete items/Uninstall. PITA, my guy also recommended doing same with AD-aware but being computer illiterate couldn't even download from filehippo:( My guy WAS happy with essentials until he had to format his whole system last month. Trying one new anti on laptop and ONE new on tower on recommendation of Coogara who writes computer books I don't understand. Both seem to be running well, but the guy(Kirk IS computer literate) I trained for our second desktop last weekend ran a bootscan with Avast and still found stuff, so I guess it's a losing battle like Dana said, but at least my computers are running at normal speed. I hate this stuff.

Those three programs Scott is talking about are different from MS Essentials and McAfee. They are to be used when existing Anti virus fails, as your's did. Many of the little viruses that come in from all kinds of places are not recognized by your standard AV programs. The reason the guru's tell you to run several of the specific trash finding programs is even they do not see everything.
Think of it like "normal" housecleaning with dust rag, vacuum, and damp mop as opposed to going in with a variety of targeting cleaners and disenfectants for that big spring cleaning. Use them, then put them away. I keep a specific "utilities" folder and in it is a subfolder called "computer clean-up" When things start to slow down I open it up, run updates, and let them rip. They always find stuff to dump.
For your all around general AV program, although this may start some arguments, I use Norton Security Suite. It is much better than McAfee IMHO.
The other thing to remember is that a computer in todays world is a pretty short lived tool. That puppy that had the biggest RAM, beaucoup Hard Drive, and blinding speed just a few years ago has trouble handling up to date programs and even some web sites that need more and more computing power to run effectively.

I wouldn't run two AV programs at the same time. You're going to get all sorts of contention issues as they fight over the same files.

A lot of the issues I came across with the many PC's I've maintained both professionally and for friends and family come from people installing multiple cleaners and anti-virus programs.

Not to mention the endless toolbars in their browsers...

Adrian is correct on only one AV program I've been told. One of the many mistakes I made.

Superantispyware is compatible with other antivirus progies.

It gets stuff the others don't.

I use it with Avast free and have been doing fine for years. I hate Macafee. From my experience it is not good at all.

If you are following my itt guy you turn only one on at a time. Then turn it off after it has doen it job and turn the other on let it do it's job then turn it off and turn your normal one back on.. If you run two at the same time they will fight and detect eachother as spy ware.

By the way the virus that i got... Nothing will remove it. They are having to clean each file save IT ON A LINIX and they will end up re-formating the hard drive.
He has had it in his shop since the 30th. Talked to him to see when i could pick up may be tommorow .. This virus is hard to remove.

Virus programs yes. Superantispyware is designed to work with a virus program.
