View Full Version : Another Impulse Buy

I bought this very pretty slab of dense figured redwood because I could not resist. It is about 6"-10" x 53" x 1.5" and a bit fire toasted with minor cracks and some natural bark left on. But now I don't know how to use it best. I am surely not going to waste it on one of my funky wave/maze/fractal experiments. It might make a good cabin sign but unfortunately I don't have a cabin.
Any ideas? Maybe I should just leave it alone until some good use comes up?

It's a work of art as it sits. Any human or robotic interaction would detract from it, IMO.

Bradys right, I got a piece, Long ten foot oval of red oak crown in center with bark falling away at all sides (go figure that one) it has been mine untouched since 95. that is a beautiful piece of Wood.

Okay, you don't have a cabin! I found a boat anchor along time ago and had no boat. Well guess what, I bought a boat. So why not buy a cabin?

Put it up for a very special project or make your wife a beautiful coffee table out of it. Make a multi picture holder save the cut outs and make other things. don't waste it on a sign.

Take a keyslot bit and make a couple of keyslots on the back and hang it up either vertically or horizontally and admire your find! ;)

you could make some nice toothpicks out of it:eek:
I would make a nice table out of it. I would leave the piece of wood as is and add legs and make a coffee table or even make that the center of a kitchen/dining room table.
You could vectorize the outsides and make a table and have this almost as an inlay in the center.
Do we dare ask what you paid for it?

Do we dare ask what you paid for it? If he was smart, he would have gotten it for free. I act like wood like that would take to long to fix and offer a very low price for it at the saw mill.

I wish I would live where you have actual saw mills. But I am here in the greater Los Angeles area. There are many good hardwood stores and lumber yards around but they don't have this kind of stuff or only very expensive as exclusive "crafts material".
So I got it off eBay for $20 from a seller in NorCal and yes... shipping with was another $20. Anyway, I just could not resist.
Thanks for the opinions and good ideas. I think I will follow the recommendation and just gently round the blunt end on the right hand side, finish the surface and use it as a large serving/presentation board for parties. That way I don't have to decide which side is the nicer one, too. :D
P.S.: I also bought a great figured board of camphor wood from a local hardwood specialty store. I think I am going to keep that and sand it a bit once a week just for the smell. :)

Should you ever find your self in my neck of the woods let me know will take you to where I buy my wood. I go through their scrap bins every time I am there and I find good wood.

G., Glad you're going to leave it alone, very pleasing just as it is. It would make a nice indirect lighting feature, but then you'd have to decide the face:)
