Did that last year for my other hobby. More functional than aesthetic, I guess. Or maybe both. 2-sided 3d machined 3.5" deep. It was a challenge with the 4" long 0.25" bits. They chattered and screamed like crazy but got the job done. This is definitely 1/2" or bigger bit territory.

Preparing the material. The sheets are aligned with dowel rod.

Clamping and roughing. The steel square is the guide for flipping the block.

Machined from the back and finished.

Installed. I would have liked to keep the plywood texture but chickened out. To avoid layer separation in use (engine heat) I laminated glass/epoxy on the outside and painted it black.

Except of course G. doesn't have a Shopbot:..... What really annoys me with such a homebuilt machine: Every time I try to reach customer service the guy is busy and the spare parts department sucks.

...Miata engine?
It is a 2.0l Ford Zetec. Not the more common Focus version but the older ZX1 that was used on European models and the Contour in the US. Some modifications come out to 175 rear wheel hp.

.....Got a pic of the whole car?...

It is the one in the middle. Nice weekend toy. Maybe I should not mention it but that was a trip end of December.

I would have never though engine parts made from wood! It would be even more bad@$$ if you used some nice hard wood and used a clear finish, Imagine the reaction with your hood up at a car show....
