Does anybody have a source for an inexpensive cutter for tapering the ends of wood dowels (like a large pencil sharpener)? Dowels are 9/16" dia.

Try a carpenter pencil sharpener

Here's a 9/16" Plug Cutter for $14:

Here's a $45 tenon cutter:

Here's another similarly-priced tenon cutter:

Note that although 9/16" is the traditional size, there are far more sources for inexpensive 1/2" and 5/8" cutters.

Jerry and Frank; thanks for your suggestions. I believe that with one simple modification, the carpenter pencil sharpener will be just the ticket. Thanks again!
