i've had a rough two weeks.

my old win98 pc died due to a dead power supply. i replaced it with a fresh win98 pc. this worked for a day. next day the pc has a dead power supply.

i buy a new nicer computer and downgrade it to win98. and also buy a UPS with voltage regulation (line conditioner) in that i'm suspicious of two pc's dying in a row.

___

my new pc is hooked up:

1 i can start my computer
2 i can start my control box
3 when i turn on my shopbot power supply, windows crashes immediately. then continues to crash every few minutes as long as the power supply is on.

___

[I]i have a now angry major new client (helix energy solutions), first project, one week delayed, installing tomorrow, and can't seem to catch a break. i will be cancelling a second install appointment if i can get this working.

any help would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming you have a serial cable to the bot control box for this older setup. If you don't connect that, is the PC fine? If the control box is already on and you connect the serial cable, does it cause the PC to crash? If so, sounds like there's something wrong with the control box that is feeding back to the PC. A call to SBHQ may be in order at that point.

Got a ShopBotter nearby that can help out with some time on their machine?

i have a power button to my SB control box and a power button on my SB power supply.

with the PC on (no crashing)
can switch on the control box
pc will connect with controller in Move/Cut mode (w/ power supply off)
no crashing

turn on SB controller power supply
instant crash
continuous crashing

this is a new PC. it was not happening with the original or replaced pc.

Do you have another serial cable you can try? It's been quite a while since my old PRT control box, but that is the only link between the two, right? Could there be a pin in the serial cable that has gotten bent over and is grounding out when tightened on?

i'll look.

this is a novice question (had the machine for 15 years, use it about four times a year).

my PC "connects" with the port with the control box on. not in "preview" mode but in actual "move/cut" mode. i didn't think that was possible without the control box power supply switched on. the motors won't turn in "K" command. but still it finds it.

when i, while connected (SB control to PC in move/cut), turn on the SB power supply, it crashes instantly.

i'll inspect the serial. no extras laying around.

after checking
cables solid, look good

also tried
1 PC "on"
2 SB control box "off"
3 turn on power supply, crashes instantly

one thing i hadn't tried is not using the new UPS voltage regulator.

i left the PC, SB control box, and monitor on the UPS.

but plugged the SB power supply into a different line. turned on the power supply and "no crash".

will knock around with the shopbot seeing if i get a crash later on. very possible. it has run and crashed. but at least this seems to be two things i can repeat.
