RE-SURFACING THE SPOIL BOARD. Today I decided that I need to re-surface the spoil board. My spoil board was full of gauges, patterns and mistakes.
I started the normal re-surfacing then I realized that it would take a very long time to re-surface mine down deep enough to remove all the marks. Then it hit me use the 1/2" end mill take it down to good all over (which was .25 at the deepest mark.) so I drew up my tool path using the 1/2" bit and I just did a Pocket cut for the whole board.. Worked like a charm. Actually it is smooth enough that I do not need to use my surfacing bit... Thought I would pass this on to all of you.
Now tonight I will have a smooth surface to sleep on.. I have gotten stranded at my shop.. went in ditch at the shop due to ice under the snow, mountain road that the wrecker has to come across is shut down. State and County out of salt so it will be tomorrow or Thursday before the wrecker can get to me.. however if it warms up I can pull out by myself. There is gravel all over the road and ditch so when 2" of ice melts I can drive out. County judge shut down all mountain roads here.
to far to walk home lol...local store .5 miles away..

it is 1/2 mile yes got food to pack me thru the next two days. I made it to the shop with little problem.. I thought the road crew would clear the road by the evening and I would have clear roads to drive home on... but they ran out of salt, and it has snowed all day long and the drive way to the shop is up hill and leans to the right, with the 2" of ice on the gravel I slid sideways. if the temp comes up to melt snow and ice I can drive out the ditch has gravel in it and on its sides. Had no clue they would run out and that they would close the two roads that you can come to the shop on which both goes across a 2,800 ft mountain,.. lol... the bad part no tv.
guess I will work till i get to tired. Tina's parents tried to get to me with 4 wheel drive but the state police would not let them cross the mountain...

Glad you got food. One bad thing about the Desktop is you'd have to be a very small contortionist to sleep on it:) Bet you're glad you got the big powerstick!

it is not as bad as it seems. I have furniture blankets (large ones) I can make me a soft pad plus have several to sleep under.. I have slept in worse places... I've got food, water, ice and the shop has central heat and air.. so all in all It is not bad. lol.. I have a microwave in the shop so all is ok.
by the way this is to the shop botter that works for Kraft making the velveeta shells and cheese tell them to put more cheese in the pouch..

Jack, Wrong drone, Think he needs a Pizza Hut drone:) Eugene, Be Glad you're in KY and not ME(-5F here) that stuff freezes like cast iron, and the plows just skim it and make it glossy and too cold for salt to work. You'd be there till Saturday. Hope you vac'd that MDF dust good:)

I made it Through the night. Actually with the furniture padding it was quite comfortable. Did find out that I have some mice in the shop... heard them roaming around in the attic. Shop bot makes a descent bed.. you just have to remember that you have a router over head and not raise up to quick.
over slept but trusty dog woke me wanting to go outside. had velvetta and cheese for breakfast.
wrecker called they are going to try to get to me today around 11.
hopefully I can go home take a bath and watch tv.
and get ready to set up for show Thursday.

Ain't global warming hell. Here in Colorado not much ice fell from the sky but snow does turn into ice. I have busted it about 4 times this year. That can be rough on a 66 year old but so far the only thing hurt was my pride. Good luck.

Rick be careful at our age it takes longer for bones to heal...And the wives are at a age they cannot do much to help us if we are down...
They can say it is warming up all they want..I have only see weather like this one time before in my life and that was 50 years ago.

Yeah I about fell out when the scientist who were on their way via ship to prove global warming were stalled when their ship got stuck in the ice.
What was embarrassing was that I fell twice with in 5 minutes in the exact same place. What was I thinking.

The forecast for the next weekend is 83 degrees in our area. I guess I can call that Local Warming....

Just a a day or two hard rain and everybody freaks out here, the roads jam up and there are even news reports. I grew up in Germany and a few inches rain was just a normal occurrence (probably for you on the East Coast as well).
That said, there are many folks who take the risk building into the foothills. They have to deal with landslides in such weather (and fires when it is dry).

To Eugenes point about old bones taking longer to heal. I fell on the concrete and when i got up you can see a simulation of what i saw. Then you see after 3 months how still swollen fingers can be and how it takes longer to heal.
See how it is curling down, i have to wear a "stretching rack" torture device to bend it back straight.
You need to be careful especially when it comes to fingers at our age:eek:

Eugene - There is a CR command within the Shopbot software. I use this to surface my spoilboard instead drawing up a special toolpath.

i USED IT THE FIRST TIME BUT IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN ALL NIGHT TO GET TO SOME OF THE GROVES IN THE SPOIL BOARD SO I USED THE 1/2 BIT AND TOOK IT DOWN 1/4 INCH THEN USED SURFACING BIT.
THE WRECKER GOT TO MY SHOP AT 11 THEN THE OTHER WRECKER GOT TO MY SHOP AT 1 HE PULLED THE FIRST ONE OUT THEN PULLED ME OUT... I TOLD THE FIRST ONE TO PUT ON CHAINS BEFORE STARTING UP THE HILL THAT IT WAS ALL ICE UNDER THE SNOW.. WELL HE MISSED BE BY ABOUT SIX INCHES AND ENDED UP STUCK. I FINALLY GOT HOME YESTERDAY EVENING AROUND 4... STAYING HOME TODAY. ..

Eugene - The CR command wouldn't make a difference on time. You can change the cutter diameter, overlap, depth of cut, etc. The cut speed is controlled by your move speed if memory serves me right. So, you just have to set the desired move speed before beginning the CR command.

You are right... however I had groves that were .28 to .30 deep.. was quicker to use the 1/2 end mill to get it to that depth on one pass. the Surfacing bit is limited to depth of cut.. around 1/16 would have taken many passes to get to the final depth... the 1/2 end mill took it down in one pass. then all I had to do was smooth out the small ridges with the surfacing bit.

You can use any diameter bit with the CR command.

I use a 1 1/2 inch diameter flat bottom bit. It only takes about 30 minutes to do my table, which is 48" x 96". Sometimes I take .25 or more in one pass without any problems.
