A guy has 125 feet of 4/4 kiln dried quarter sawn european steamed beech and wants $400.00. That's $3.20 board foot. See pic, is this what it would go for retail?

Jack, Only reputable Hardwood supplier within 60 mile is Jack at Atlantic Hardwoods and I know he's high but that's because he's got an L.L.Bean type guarantee,"Customer satisfaction guaranteed"
Wait for other responses. Just got cherry, hard maple and black walnut loaded on a truck in PA at 1/2 his price , BUT I haven't seen it yet! Only went with it as it's being cherry picked at the mill by Amish to be delivered to an Amish furniture maker up here and we "piggybacked" on his truckload.
Anyways, here's Jack's Retail sheet.

P.S. Saw you on the forum today after the sun came up? You feeling OK? http://www.atlantichardwoods.com/html/lumber.htmlum

Scott,
as long as i stay in the basement, windows are painted black with curtains, I seem to be ok.
I figure $3.+ bucks a board foot isn't too bad, it looks beautiful. The only problem is i'll just add it to the pile of wood that i will probably never use:eek:

Jack, Don't get me wrong-Beech is nice, but kind of bland and very uniform. Nice when you want a lot of square footage that looks the same. Good for contrasting with your pics panels and (ebony-ebonized) trim accent.
If you've got too much wood, you could always ship it to me(only the highly figured stuff please- my racks are full:)

Good tool handles and plane blocks too. Dick, Took 2 trips down while looking for teak and flame birch for the house in '94-95, but it must have been between loads even though over the phone they said they had lots in stock.Drove away with nothing I NEEDED(but did buy yellow and purpleheart, and a little Indian rosewood that caught my eye, if I remember right:)
Should probably give them a 3'rd look after 19 yrs.
You ever dealt with Northland Forest Products?
Sorry Jack--HAVE to talk about wood,right?:)http://www.northlandforest.com/kingston_retail_hardwoods.shtml

I deal almost exclusively with Highland Hardwood unless I go through the loggers in Maine. They have bandsaw mills. I get100 year old white Cedar for .60/bf
http://highlandhardwoods.com/lumber/retail/
Highland's price for flatsawn, rough 4/4 2.45
They do not have quartersawn

The Troy location is just 20+ miles from me. Unless i need something specific for a project and the customer is paying for it, I can't justify paying high retail prices when i can get several different species from a couple different sawmill guys or tree guys i know at a way lower price. I bought two cedar trees from my guy for $20.00 apiece then he charged me $50.00/hr to cut them up and sticker them for me.

I was just curious Jack as I'm trying to price out a production item for steady repeat monthly orders and can't count on "deals". Hard wood lumber suppliers in Kirks location "Limestone,Maine" are thin on the ground. He just got a wholesale source, but it depends on "piggybacking" our order on truckloads from PA and we can't afford to stockpile much yet, so looking at retail to fill gaps. That company is also kind of on Dad's trip to me and I was Just wondering how they were to deal with as Dad is still a complete greenhorn on choosing wood.

Well the location in Troy is fairly big with a decent selection and what they do is lead you out to the "stall" where they have that particular species and roll the stairs up to it and say "go pick out what you want"....which is great if you want to "cherrypick" the pile (which i do:D)
But if he doesn't know what to look for, or stay away from, i'm sure they will get it for him. You know it just depends on how lazy or energetic the employee is:eek:
Are you talking about the Troy location being on the way to you from Dad's?

Thanks Jack, As of 2 weeks ago, at least he knows what vertical grain is:) 83 yrs. young though, so we'll see about stairs and board flipping. 3 weeks ago he said "you mean you get to PICK your boards?" My response "If you don't you're crazy!". I still remember my first trip to a hardwood store as an ignorant dweeb:)

And how long were you in the store last week?:D:rolleyes:
Would he be going to the Troy location? If so that's only 20-25 miles away and he could come by here and i could load up some pieces for you:D

Be nice to visit, but Kingston NH store would be between Vermont and Maine:)
If he wound up in Virginia that would be the longest "Shortcut" he's ever taken:)
Glad you mentioned stairs, not a wheelchair users favorite word. Need a place with a horizontal filing system, OR ,I'm pretty handy with a manlift:) DON'T say stick me on a pallet and hoist me! :)

Yeah if he wound up down here i'd say he needed to get his GPS recalibrated or updated! I'm on the way to Shopbot so if you ever come down to go to Shopbot you'll have to stop by.
I don't know how their other locations are set up but it seems like every time i've gone to this place, the species i want is always on the top, and the boards i want are on the bottom of the pile!

So---You going to buy the beech or what? :) My lumber racks are organized the same as theirs, my plywood too for that matter:) All my 6/4 cherry is in the loft over shop and all my birdseye is in the garage rafters, I don't know what I was thinking:o
