Just curious - any out there a fellow audio or audio/video junkie? Part of what got me interested into CNC and woodworking in general was DIY speaker gear.

I'm an active member on AVS forum and have built several full range speakers, cabinets, screen designs, room treatments, seating risers, and subwoofers for myself and friends. To date they have been without the help of my newly acquired 'bot but I'm very much looking forward to see what I can come up with now. :)

I have built several amps and speaker boxes. Here is one of them.

On road gear, pa's and such, it is common to set the speaker face board back into the cabinet an inch or so. then you can still put a grill on it and not have it sticking out of the front of the box. A little more built in protection so to speak. On home systems, this may not be much of an issue??

In the home audio/home theater world it is a bit more to recess just the drivers vs. the whole front panel. This is done for a specific reason to avoid diffraction - keeping the driver(s) flush to the main panel and speaker's edges avoids any cancellation or unwanted reflections from the box's edges.

Also, I suppose there isn't as much opportunity for damage in a residential environment.

Scott - They are all 18" drivers. I have 4 dual opposed boxes (8 X 18 drivers) in the theater and 4 X 18's in the living room. Subwoofer amplification is 1800 watts (RMS) in the living room and 16,000 in the theater. Makes for an interesting ride for movies. :D

If my shop didn’t make you deaf just step into my living room!
Seriously… Do you use all that power? Maybe that’s what my neighbor is doing when his buddies come over! Now I understand.

Andrew, Know what you mean. Got a "True Sub-Woofer Cube" tied in with Velodyne 18 and B&W towers and center, and 7 Zones of 8X10" inwalls(Strains the Adcom). Thunderstorms in a movie make the dishes rattle and stuff on shelves "walk":) LOVE the THX sound.

In most cases, no. However, from time to time a group of us have been known to perform "spirited demonstrations" for each other. At such points I've tapped the clip lights on the amps. :p

Andrew,

I have built many speakers on my ShopBot. These are pictures of a set I built a few years ago. The wooden midrrange horn was the most complicated piece in this design.

Stan - very cool, especially the horn! As I said in PM I'd love to chat regarding the design and/or check out your aspire files.

just a few I've built over the years
Horns are more difficult but worth the effort

Brian - were most of your builds kit/plan based or are you doing crossover design as well?
