I have seen a tool i'd like to have....most tools i already have but this is new to me. a oscillating belt sander. I don't need the BIG one like Grizzly has but this one looked good and wondered if anyone else had one or another model they might recommend:
RIDGID Oscillating Edge/Belt Spindle Sander
http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-Oscillating-Edge-Belt-Spindle-Sander-EB4424/100061671?N=5yc1vZc28s

It's only $199.00 and converts to a spindle sander.

Thanks for pointing this one out Jack, good price! seeing $319 plus $27 shipping on amazon. We need something like this for Northern shop. Kirks Dads 6X80" is nice, but not oscillating/in ill lit basement/old and hard to swap expensive belts. Thanks

I have one of the Rigid Drum/Oscillating Sanders. It is a real workhorse. It is too small for a furniture shop but is fine for the kind of work I do. I have given it a good workout for the past 4 years and is works as good as it was new. Fine machine in my book.

Jack it is a good tool, however i only use it for the spindle sander. As far as oscillating all the belt does is move back and forth. I oscillate my wood rather than the belt lol... This one you are talking about is good for edge sanding ..

Jack,

I've been using this tool, pretty heavily, for about 3 years now. Excellent edge sander for small projects. The spindle sander is pretty nice too.

I use to edge sand cabinet doors, parts I make for a sports plaque company plus many other uses.

I would recommend it without hesitation.

Excellent tool, I've had mine for a few years now and use it often.

I used one of the older ones which was a good tool. This current version, I had purchased and setup for acrylic fabrication with a router speed control. Worked outstandingly well. Good investment.

Thanks Jack, We bought 1 for each shop. I've only been using mine for about 3 weeks now and don't know how I got along without it. I find myself using it constantly as it's rigged only 4' away from Desktop. Best $200 spent in quite awhile.:) I'm even using to sand off my tabs on most of my stuff, instead of going out to garage and swapping bits in my lam trimmer from roundover to straight and then back to roundover.

I haven't got to use mine much but i like the belt sander/spindle combo. My other spindle sander was single purpose and the sleeves tended to ride up the sleeveholder since i lost the "thingamajiggy" that holds it down that went on top. (that is the technical term for it )

We're getting the most use out of ours getting a finished true edge with 220G and then swapping to 320G for the end grain (so finish penetrates close to the same) and sighting along the board edge, it looks so much better than hand or spindle sanding. tremendous time saver, improves results, and we can easily move it around the shop(unlike Kirks cast monster in his shops basement-easier belt change too). Got 5 different grits from 5 different suppliers to compare- if you get reversible belts almost the whole surface can be used and you don't get that"ka-thump--Ka-thump". So used to using my Bosch 4X24 at 80-120G I wasn't ready for how versatile it is with finer grit belts. I bought the Bosch benchtop adapter but it's not really the same animal.
