I have the cubify and have had some good success with the faces. having it attached to the laptop allows for better use than hand held.. I am going to order the fuel 3d and will report on it asap

I received my sense scanner a few weeks ago. I loaded it up and fooled with it for 1/2 hour. Unfortunately, work has been SO busy I havent had a chance to really wring it out, but what I did so far seems promising.
I hope in the next month to start trying it out on some furniture parts, etc which is what I really bought it for.

I do have a question or so about how it reads depth, and what it does within it's own software.
If I were using it as Andy wants for furniture parts, then it would need accurate depth interpretation.
If I were using it to, for example, create a relief from a shot of a car, then It would be great if it were capable of "limiting z" and still getting a good bas-relief without distortion. (might be worth it just to have a good relief of my roadster in 3/4 view!)
What have you found Jim (Or anyone else using one)?

I'm not sure about how the sense scanner works, but I signed up for the beta for this http://cirri.co/. It is software driven and uses a normal camera (iphones will work). They haven't released it yet but from what I understand it requires the camera settings to be calibrated with the software. The level of detail they are touting for the price was tough to pass up. I'll update with details once I receive it.

James,
Do you have anything you have scanned that you could post for others to d/l to check the quality of the scans and resulting objects?

It scans accurate dimensions. I was fooling around with both a large turning half (that I had left over from a job) and also a raised panel door.
I hope to dedicate some more time to it in the near future and report back on my findings.

Doesn't look bad for the money. Data quality is probably on par with the SB probe (.035-.045 or coarser step res - from mfg FAQ). A neat toy to have around the shop, but ultimately I am not sure how useful it would be at that resolution. I'd like to see some scans from it. The original, the scan, the copy that was cut on the CNC. Ya can't have too many toys! :)

I downloaded the STL of the face from the Fuel 3D site (http://www.fuel-3d.com/portfolio/femaleface/). It loaded nice in aspire and looked good on the preview. The only questions were how much edit work was done to the model from the scan to the STL.

I got as far as scanning in the 1/2 newel post I made and importing it into aspire. Did a tool path. Looked pretty good.
They say it is not meant for fine details. But on things I plan to use it for I am certain it will work great once I get a hang if the features.
The hardest part for me is to scan all around the part without losing the position. It takes coordination for sure, holding the scanner in one hand, and trying to watch the computer screen and object at the same time

Those are important questions to have...and the proof is in the pudding. While some scanners excel at scanning things all the way around, they are downright horrid when it comes to scanning a flat panel. Do LOTS of research and take your test part with you before you buy anything costing real money.

Yes...this can be an art in & of itself. Keep playing - as I am sure you know from other areas of interest, it pays off.

Sorry I have not been getting post notifications,, need to check that, here are two bust I did, one is David who owns my shop building and the other is Buddy Easler, some of you may remember Buddy from way back in shopbotter archives ( wooden Harley Davidson, lots of topography carves)
these were quick scans done with the sense scanner, anyone who knows these two will see the quick out front likeness is pretty good.. best way to use the sense is to tape it to a win 7 laptop (loves fast computers) I will sell mine and get the new Ipad one soon enough.
I added a pic of david for comparison

Like Braday said and I agree do not spend any money on this stuff until after some careful research, I have been able to treat it as a hobby and spent a few grand although I came real close to making a 25 k mistake.

James I applaud your efforts. A couple things i was struck by was the principal wanted "food service" training instead. To me that's preparing you for a life working at McDonalds..rediculous:rolleyes:
The thing that i got out of shop class (both wood and metal) was the ability to work with my hands, be artistic, creative, problem solve, use math, (some science) and many other attributes. So it's so much more then building a chair or things that people can't appreciate that goes along with it.
I can take this knowledge anywhere in this country and make a living if i needed to because it applies to things from being a handyman to building fine furniture.
I believe the schools are setting up our youth for failure because not all are equipped for college.
I think of us like ants...some are the "queens" and some are protectors and some are worker ants, and the colony can't survive without each of them...so keep up the crusade!

I was hoping to report back here in the past week or two. But, I have been limited to maybe 1 hour with the Sense scanner. And, what I did scan (the arm and crest rail on my maole rocker I did last winter) looked like it was going to turn out really well, but I forgot to save as an .stl file and all I got was unusable data - stupid part on my behalf since the scans took about 5 or 10 minutes each and required some pretty tiring hloding of the scanner & my 17" laptop.
Now, the other thing is the laptop I have (I have two - one that I run my shopbot with and one almost duplicate that I use for design only) is quite slow and without a lot of memory.
I am also looking to get into more design and rendering so after much debate I bit the bullet and ordered a killer fast machine, with the fastest processer you can get in a laptop and 32 gig of memory. I hope the scans will also be faster/easier as my basic machine is very slow and choppy, nothing I witnessed at the McGrew's camp. I do remember James saying the computer has to be fairly up to date. Well, mine should be :) (not that I know much about computers but the Intel® Core™ i7-4940MX Quad Core Extreme 3.10GHz, 4.0GHz Turbo with the 32 Gig memory is as far as I can tell thing for fast processing and hard core graphics)
I am hoping to get the machine in two weeks - right after I get back from holidays. So, at that time I will make sure I can devote at least a few hours to it and get back to you guys.
I did scan some other stuff like turnings, etc and actually bring them into Aspire. I can see my weakness' will be importing and setting up files in 3D in Aspire, something I have only done once before. It is a learnign curve all around...
Anyhow, will report back the last week of July if everythign goes as planned.

Mr. McGrew, I too applaud your efforts. I seen no reason not to expose our children to the woodworking efforts. I have kids in H.S. and each and every one of their friends has been inspired by my little shop. Kids going into engineering... computer science... or anywhere their hearts lead them are motivated by what these machines can do. Widens their horizons and encourages them to seek higher goals. Thank you for your leadership.

The trick to photo scanning is to build a turntable for the scanned piece to rest on with markings showing degrees. Set the camera on a tripod and place object on turntable and take a pix and calibrate the software, then shoot away. Usually needs about 30 or so pix to make a clean 3d scan. Main issues are reflectivety of the piece, any transparency of the piece or any voids in the piece. Making a photo booth of sorts really helps with a very neutral background and constant and consistent lighting. I have a couple of the non photo scanners, laser etc, and none of them work as advertised. I have gotten a few good scans but I 'painted' the object flat white first and then scanned it in a completely dark environment. Not an easy solution. Russ

That's perfect. Should work with even the lowest of the 'camera' scanner software solutions. I have a MakerBot Digitizer and its awful. The Cubify Sense is a little better but lacks the control that using a turntable would give. I have a MatterForm scanner on order and they 'should' ship before the end of the year. A slightly different approach combining a camera and twin lasers. All this with a digital turntable. 5 min scan low res 12 min scan high res. The propaganda scans look promising, no object prep and no special lighting required. As they say 'we shall see'. Having a 'reasonable scanner would be invaluable to my modeling efforts. I am anxious to see what others come up with. I love the turntable that is very cool. Russ

I've been seriously considering one since I saw this thread. Unfortunately I have an ipad 3. Well, not unfortunately, I love it. Just can't use it with this thing.
I've got stuff so backed up it'd take me a year to find time to play with it, so maybe it's a good thing. :)

Well, my new Dell PC came today. Wowsers.. it is super super fast. In Apsire, complex 3D stuff that used to take minutes to generate the image on my Acer in lowest resolution takes seconds in the highest resolution. I guess that's the difference between a $600 machine and a $3600 machine.
I briefly tried the Sense scanner... loads faster, much easier to track the object. I am beat (long day, 10 hrs +) and I just finished loading all my software on the new machine. Will fool with it tomorrow if I can, at work and try scanning something into the machine.
SO the scanner is cheap. But you need a good computer to make it function from the looks of it. Or at least better than what I am using to run my SHopbot.

Does yours hook onto a ipad or is yours like a square with a handle and you plug it into your computer? Are they the same thing but with different types of brackets to hold onto your ipad as opposed to a handheld holder?
(from your description of buying a bigger computer i assumed you have the handheld one versus the bracketed one for the ipad?)
Do you have a picture of your scanner?
What i was wanting was this one:

I think James' is the cubify handheld one?
If you get around to scanning something and making it into an object i'd love for you to send it to me so i could see the quality of the finished product. I realize a lot of it has to do with how good you scan something but it's a start.
Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the clarifications...

Kevin has a business selling computer related stuff - he is a dealer for the Sense products. There should be no confusion, he can certainly sell you one.
Mine is the stand alone PC one. That is the one we saw at the camp. The one for the Ipad was not yet available, and I don't have an Ipad air anyhow (minimum to use it) and was going to upgrade my computer anyhow.
I brought home some stuff from work today (chair seat, pc of moulding, a guitar neck and some other stuff) I hope to try and scan later tonight.

You are wrong on the iPad Andrew! You need it to save time. For instance I'm typing this sitting on the dunny! Try doing that with your desktop or laptop. Also very good for instant research as if you're having trouble "going" you can look up Doctor Google on the spot! Show Jacob, "Tommy the Talking Cat" and you'll never get it back off him.

I have an Ipad - the 2nd version. But you need the latest one for the scanner to work. I didnt want to get a new one, as all I use it for is when I travel, or to let my son watch kids videos.
I did spend about an hour doing some scans before the natural light started to die... and our house doesnt have any really good strong lights.
I got a really good scan of one of my carved chair seats. also of a bowl (larger one). The molding and guitar neck didnt want to cooperate, but I think contrast is a key factor (or lack of it). I would like to try playing with some colour, ie, painting.
Funny thing, I tried a quick scan of my dog's head, and it turned out great. But he was laying next to the patio door and had a lot of light yet on him.
More experimenting... but the computer is a big improvement.

I can't seem to get any answers to some of my questions....I called one of the companies recommended here and you would think some of the simple questions i could get answered.
I need to know if the ipad i have will work with the Isense scanner. I asked what info i needed to tell them in order for them to tell me if it will work with their unit and where i needed to look and they couldn't tell me. Does that make sense?
I have an ipad that is about a year or two old. I have model number MC756LL/A running software version 7.1.2(11D257) capacity 57 gigs
Does anyone here have any knowledge as to whether this unit will work with my ipad, or who might be able to give me some correct info?

Jack,
I just saw this today, sorry. I'd have answered earlier.
I am very sorry to say that other than fooling with the scanner once since I got my new computer, I have been way too busy to even get it out of the box.
I had a bunch of things going on in my shop, moving some equipment etc. As well my Shopbot vacuum mod had taken a lot of time.
I have hired a new guy 6 weeks ago, and that has doubled my workload trying to train him and get my own work done at the same time.
And I have been very busy at work trying to keep on top of things, as I have been overwhelmed with work and there is a lot going on right now.
At home, my wife is due to deliver kid #2 this week, and we have been preparing for that the past month or two - getting things rearranged here and set up, etc.
Life has been, um "busy", lol :D
I will get back to the scanner thing, but it might be a while yet from the looks of things.
