View Full Version : question about backlighting with LED's

I work for a metal furniture company and have been tasked with designing our new sign. It turns out that they've already taken down our old sign, so "no pressure".

I realize that these signs are out of sheet metal, but I still hope some of you can advise.

There are two signs.

SIGN 1 is a freestanding, totem kind of sign. Three of the 4 sides will have the logo cut out with our laser. It will have a colored sheet of metal spaced about 1.5" behind each face. My "bright idea" is to put LED strips inside vertical corners of the sign to illuminate the colored background.

I'm wondering, will the background show up during the day or will it just be a mess of shadow?

Since this sign won't be seen much at night, should I drop the lighting and put the background tight against the back of the logo?

At night, would LED's in the corners light evenly enough across the face?

SIGN 2 is made similarly, but is horizontal, attached to the wall, and is not lit.

Should I leave a small gap between the sign and background, or sandwich them together?

I appreciate any advice or anecdotes that you can share.

Colored metal ?
Not sure if LED's would show through at all, light does not pass through metal very well.
If it was colored plexiglass I doubt if it would light very good in sunlight, but would look great the darker it gets.
I might be misunderstanding what you are trying to do, but per the thread title, metal is not the ideal material to backlight.

Cut the design through the sheet metal, cut an engraved piece of plexi behind it, that matches the cutouts, and edge light that - look awesome
