Sanding complex contoured shapes? Arbortech Contour Sander?

Are there any devices similar to the Arbortech Contour Sander for sanding complex-but smooth contoured surfaces??? (Like a bowl or chair?)

Another thread mentioned Sand-O-Flex, but doesn't that leave directional lines?

Arbortech's looks like a great product, but shipping to the USA is exremely high and the cost is prohibitive from ordering replacement pads and paper. I'm trying to find out if they have US distribution and will repost...

Also, does anyone know what grits are necessary for sanding after milling with a ShopBot 0.25" ball nose bit? (I haven't used a ShopBot yet, but am looking to buy one soon).

found this instruction for making a foam ball - looks ideal for sanding bowls but leaves a directional grain... but can these be purchased anywhere?

Kevin the Sorby bowl sander is only $69.00 and uses Kingspor velco pads. Its a pleasure to use and here in Australia is the tool of choice by serious bowl turners. There are lots of cheaper generics available. Comes with several foam backed holders. An amazing tool that needs no power yet can remove stock like an RO!

There is that Guinevere/King Arthur (who comes up with these names?) sanding system with the round rubber dome that is probably comparable to the homemade ball sander. Looks interesting, not cheap but I have not tried that.

Thanks for the ideas. These look like great ball sanders. Any ideas for something flatter but still able to do concavities (like the Arbortech Contour Sander)?

I use a sanding Mop, it is comprised of Kligspor sand paper strips on a mandrel, you can add an acrylic backing plate if you want stiffer fingers. I will see if I can dig up some pictures for you.

I have mine mounted in my drill press and use it for many things, from hair on carvings, or cleaning up a routed profile on material.

I have been using them well for man 12 years...yikes.

Kevin I have been using the Arbortech Contour for a month now. It is a good bit of kit and really works well on contoured surfaces. What would make it perfection is if you could get a half size angle grinder as this would make it less tiring to use as it doesnt need a heap of power.
