Question for the experienced sign makers. I'm making outdoor signs for hiking/biking trail network. Any opinions/comments on using Medex(water resistant MDF). We're also looking at using Color Core. Medex would be fraction of the cost, but will it hold up in the western sun?

I would not use medex. use extira or colorcore.
Scott,
I agree with Alex. Medex was popular about ten years ago until many sign businesses started having problems with it. The issue was it falling apart. Once the surface is scratched all the water resistance was gone. I would offer you this challenge. Take a scrap of Extira and Medex, drop them in a bucket of water and see what happens. The Medex will fall apart.
There was a sign business in Taos who used it quiet successfully but that's a dry, arid climate. It always pays to do your own testing.

Scott here in Oz we use the composite decking made from ground bamboo and old milk bottles. Machines beautifully and you can offer a 20 year warranty against rotting with no fear of getting a claim. Now the downside is only size is 5 X 3/4', doesnt like long unsupported spans. It is absolutely suitable for hiking markers and the green colours are really eco friendly.
