Shopbotters -
We (our woodshop class ) were recently approached by our principal and asked to do a custom sign for our performing arts center. He gave us the picture with text on top of text - We have done normal text layouts on our machine but not sure if something like this is possible - Any help would be awesome and really help with some brownie points with the higher ups -

I would do the sign without the (Dan & ) then cut the top letters out on a separate piece and attach to the sign. Make sense?

I agree with Joe, do the background in 3D, pocket out 0.05 depth for the letters on top and cut them from a different piece of lumber. Detail and paint/stain the bottom and then glue the cut out into the pocket. Finish the whole sign.

Bryan, totally forgot about the idea of pocketing for the letters, awesome idea.

Not the one I was looking for though.

The one linked from that post might be better - http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16544

Just use the create shape from vectors function, it's super easy.
Make your 3d model one height, the background letters another height, and the script another.
That's assuming you want to paint the letters.
Otherwise you can do your 3d background, create inlay for the back letters, install them, then vcarve and inlay the script letters.
Still easy peasy.

It's an absolutely beautiful idea for a sign, one I intend to rip off at a future date. ;)
