A guy has a tree is approximately 30 inches in diameter and 12 foot long. This is a log already down. Is it anything that looks good or work with ok?

Jack,
my local mill had some kentucky coffee wood. Very desirable. Stringy, had to use new bits on it. The grain pattern is even more pronounced than oak.
I still have a few board feet of it waiting for a project worthy of it!
So think of oak, stronger pattern, and stringy.

I worked with it once. "Stringy" doesn't quiet cover the stuff I had. It looked good but was hard to work with to get clean cuts, fortunately for what I was doing it was not a problem but I've not considered it since because I just didn't like working with it.

Jack the correct term on the tree is Coffee bean tree. They actually used the beans to make coffee from. A little Strong but still is a coffee. lol... It can be a beautiful wood recommend getting it 1/4 sawed does a lot better that way.

I concur that the wood is "stringy". It looks a lot like ash with the open pores, but it has a nice redish brown color. I only made a few items with it and never bought more because ash was less expensive (for me locally).
Here is a link to a little write-up from the mill I bought it from:

Thanks for the link. I drive right by there every month or so. Never knew it existed. Nice to find a (sort of) local source for specialty lumber. They aren't exactly giving it away but then neither should we.
