This was my first time trying a Bow tie/butterfly joint on a scrap piece of walnut . Think it came out pretty good. Cant wait to try it with some different designs.

Austin, Using regular inlay, or VCarved Inlay? Haven't done a standard inlay yet, but you can get pretty fancy using the Vinlay method--Finally got the grain going the right direction on my third try:)
Looks Clean:)
Shopbot Beats the heck out of the first time I did one totally by hand:)
If regular, then what did you use for a tolerance?
Nice slab.

Just standard inlay. The crack was pretty big so I wanted to get deep enough to hold it together. The inlay is about 0.5". Those v inlays look great! really want to give it a try.

Yep, FUN (but don't forget to mirror image Male!! :)
Should have seen me trying to make it fit at the end of a 16 hr day:) (took me almost a minute before I said "You IDIOT!!". :) )
Yeah, .2" deep on vulture and .25" on branch.
Like the idea of tree silhouettes holding a board together----Although a "Butterfly" butterfly joint would be Trite but possibly Neat:)

Austin,
I like your bowtie. I realize this was scrap but what would you do to fill in the larger area? Was that purpleheart you used as the bowtie? Excellent job:D

Yes it is purple heart. For the bigger gap I was going to try closing it in on the end with a temporary piece and pouring clear epoxy to fill in that gap. Seen some interesting things done like that and might as well give it a try.

I might leave it Nakashima style.

Scott,
I was looking at the other day! I think your right, I think that might be cleaner.

Joe,
Yeah this is what excites me also. Just want to put bowtie joints on everything now! lol

I haven't tried this yet but since it is cnc how bout' not doing a traditional bowtie. Try doing a bass or a deer or a tree or . . . . You've got the juices flowing, soon as I shovel a little more snow I think I'll go out and play with it some. I love doing inlays so this should be a gas. Thanks for posting. Russ
