Has anyone tried using clear packing tape as a mask for carving signs?

I have not tried it but I think it would peel your paint. I think it has too much tack. Just an opinion.

They will have transfer tape, which is used in signmaking. It come in widths up to 15 inches and it also will be available in different "stickiness" . It is especially made for what you are trying to do.

Two companies that are heavily used for their painted sign masks in the industry are Gerber and Avery. Avery will send you a "sample pack" to try out (or at least they used to!) Google will take you there. The biggest problem people have is not letting their paint fully cure before applying mask and cutting. The field finish must be smooth. If you want to do a "natural" sign with a textured finish you can use "Dr. Crumley's rootin tootin sign mask": A thick coat of rubber cement.
