Here is an easy way to simulate a "barn board" look in a Sign Foam sign.
Using just a wire brush and a nail, in a few minutes the surface can be prepared for V-carving. A .063 or .125 outside profile cut .063 deep allows for easy painting of the V-carved lettering.
The backgrounds were painted with latex solid color stains. The first coat covers the entire background and is a darker shade. A lighter shade is then scumbled over the surface with a nearly dry foam brush.
These were fun signs to make for my niece and nephew for Christmas. I have made much larger commercial signs using this technique and I can tell you it is quite a work out. I now reserve this technique for smaller signs.
