we use tempered threaded rod in HDU constantly. This sign is nearly 4'' thick which is heavy so the wind does not blow it around. it is two pieces back to back.
routed two channels in back of each single sided sign for electrical metallic tubing.
tempered threaded rod was inserted and a eye bolt attached with connector hardware.
we put the HDU cap on sign to take the lateral forces.
We do this with larger 4x8 HDU signs also. they become very rigid to reduce any force placed on them by vandals or nature. I see alot of broken wider HDU signs from people kicking them when placed between poles.
when we use wider HDU signs between poles the rod also goes through countersunk posts for easy removal of sign.
We have been using threaded rod in HDU since around 1995 and have never had one problem.
We try to use at least 1/2'' tempered rod but have used thinner and thicker depending on the situation.
The thing i like about it is there is not much exposed hardware. I do like ornate hardware.
