Carved this awhile back, but finally put it up, think I need a bigger wall.

Beautiful!! I can only imagine the time involved with carving such a huge piece. I've got 2.5 hours in a 8x10 piece, though it isn't tweaked for speed either, seriously awesome!

Dude! Pretty sweet!
...but....now you need a longer table to go under it! Get crackin' !!! ;)

There is cool , and then there is cool! That my friend is REALLY COOL! Russ
Impressive, glued up walnut I'm guessing.
My estimate on cut time would be an even 30 hrs, must have been pretty nerve wracking.

Thank you for your comments, I like "cool" Russ, it is and its big..
warping we can handle, the time on this one was 108 hours including the rough cuts using a 3/4 inch bit the finish was Beckwiths long 1/8 tapered. Its cedar the back is left open to breath and it smells delicious in the room its in, I have done quite a number of these not quite as big but they were always for others, so it feels good to "hang" one that's not going down the road.
Here is a buddy of mine, owner of Pioneer Log Homes of which the TV show the Timber Kings and Carver Kings on HDTV. https://www.facebook.com/bryan.reid.5832?fref=ts

Greetings Dan,
If I may ask, what is the size and the thickness?
Thanks,
Michael

Wow 108 hrs. Did you let it run or did you stop for sleep? Really great work.

The Carving was nonstop, Michael the material was 3.5 inch and now with precurved struts epoxied on the back its 4.75 deep.

pardon my ignorance Dan, but what are precurved struts. A picture would be nice along with your explanation. I am still very impressed with the detail in your carving. A lot of z there so no wonder it took so many hours.

Cowboy, a precurved strut is a piece of wood cut with a predetermined curve in it to provide tension, the more curve the more tension.

Nice Job Dana! :)
What size bit did you go with? That's the problem with going "Small".....TRYING to get the detail Dan gets going "Large". :)
Never mind my machine can't hack the Size----It's owner couldn't hack the Time!
LOVE looking at this stuff:)

I carved it with a 1/16 ballnose bit and then went over the bottom half with a 1/32 ballnose for better detail, the 1/16 carve took 2 1/2 hours( whole model) and the 1/32 bit took 3 hours (for half the model).
The estimated time was less than half that. So I need to play with that some.

Thanks Dana,
Haven't unwrapped my 32'd yet, DID putz with a 1"(Y) VectorArt3D file yesterday in Bloodwood with 3 different bits getting my feet wet(VERY 3D newbie). This was a Onsrud .25" 30degree engraving bit with a .01" flat in one pass/no roughing.
Just trying out some tips Michael Tyler gave me on Vectric forum.(starting on page 2)

Think I may have to pick up that file:)
