Heya Shopbotters,

So, for my first "project", I am going to be building a custom door for my brother's rather nice master bathroom. The molding/frame work around the door is going to stay, so I want to keep the lumber/finish in the similar ballpark as the rest of their design (closet doors/flooring/etc.) I was wondering if some of you could take a peek at this album I put on IMGUR and tell me what type of wood you think it is. If you happen to know any more details, that would be great (stain/dye/finish coat, form bits used) though I realize that's very hard from a picture. We'll see how good I know my woods, but my guess was that it is cherry. I'm probably totally wrong. Here it is: http://imgur.com/a/SVSof

Thanks guys!

Looks like birch to me. HArd to tell though, not in real life. It doesnt have the grain of cherry.

As for stain, every company calls their colours a different name so it wont mean anything if I tell you "medium walnut" unless you can get the product I use. If that makes sense.

I was thinking the same as Andrew, birch. Most likely yellow birch with a rather common color that should be easy for a stain store to match up.

Well there are two votes for Birch. It's quite possible that it is. I can see some slight blotches in the stain, a common difficulty of woods like birch, pine, aspen, cherry, etc. I also seem to be running into a lot of cabinets and doors veneered with birch around here. My hardwood dealer has it in an abundance of sizes (6/4 included for my needs). I can take some liberties with the finish as long as its not terribly contrasting. Since I can't haul off a piece of their door frame, I'm going to have to take some scrap wood and try several finishes, bring it over to their house and let them pick. Just gotta remember to write down what I did on each sample! Part of me just wants to buy walnut, finish it with some danish oil and call it a day!
