I'm using a Freud 5/8" round nose bit to make a divot into the wood. However, I'm getting these ring marks, you can see it in the wood and also in the rendering. Attached are my settings in VCarve. Is it the bit, the cutting, or is this inevitable?

Thanks!

I would try a smaller step over setting , around 7%

M,
How are you doing it?
1 Spiral gadget/Archimedes spiral = increase "wrap" #
2 Circular Array= use a full diameter line/"ramp at start and end", 100%, smooth
3 OPTION: VCP8 has dome/dishes in the clip art=decrease stepover, no roughing needed usually for a "dish"
Is it a brazed carbide bit? Fairly often cutters don't match on depth or center. Do you have a small line in the bottom of the groove when you do a simple groove?
Looks like #2 and your lines are only radius length and not diameter and that's where the cut is ending?

if you see it in preview that's what you see from machine...

I would reduce bit size pass depth rpm's

stepover to 3-5%

it's a simple machining project...adjust machining parameters preview will show you

Would anyone be so kind to provide a CRV file? I've played with stepover, pass depth... but the preview rendering still showed the tool marks. I would like to make a dish size of 40mm diameter and 10mm deep.

Scott, I played around with the dome/dishes clipart, but the middle portion doesn't get cut when I applied the "3D Finish" toolpath on it.

M,
Check your e-mail--Just putzing though, so more of an example---did NOT cut it!
