Intermittent Z zero

A friend is having trouble with an intermittent Z zero. Seems totally random. Sometimes everything works fine. Sometimes you can touch the plate to the bit, (before running the routine to check continuity) and the light turns on, run the routine and the bit crashes into the plate. You can touch the plate directly to the alligator clip and sometimes the light turns on, and sometimes it doesn't. Anybody else experience this?

Have your friend clip the ground to the plate, and with someone watching the console's input 1, check and wiggle all the wiring connections, the wires full length and the OST (blue)connectors to the CNC board.
