I stumbled across this video that had some pretty good insights to how USB ports worked and their potential problems when used in an industrial setting. I'm not very skilled in the world of computer hardware but I think this video has some good information.

Excellent video, worth watching for anybody using USB in a shop. The presenter is unusually knowledgeable, and just gives the straight scoop in simple English.
