My 4th Axis (Indexer)

Well I finally finished my 4th axis for my ShopBot.

Special thanks to Brady Watson for the help on getting the right motor and drive board for my machine.

Very cool! Now we expect to see several indexer projects here...soon! Even though you don't have a long bed you can always design projects in sections and be able to dowel them together to form a large project like a bedpost or something similar. Good job!

NP Brad, and yes its very stout.

Timken bearing,Gates timing belt and gears 1:4 ratio and 2 people cant even make it flinch while moving lol

around $650 for all the parts and raw materials, I work in a machine shop so I did the designing and machine work my self.

Great job. What is the biggest stock you can use with it? 4 or 5 in?

Sorry for the late replay been busy,
The chuck can grab on to a 4.5" stock and the B axis (indexer) can chuck up on a 8" piece and not hit the power stick,
but because I don't have the Z axis extension so the Z axis can only take a 4 inch.

I was asked if I would share the specs to the 4th axis I made so I decided to.

the chuck and end center are for a mini lathe found them on Ebay

A couple of questions:

1. What type of grease did you use?
2. Can you provide the pin numbers where you plugged the motor into?
3. Do you have to do anything special with the motor or does it automatically work with the Shopbot buddy control board?

1. I used standard bearing grease that we have at the shop for the bearings.

2. This is the wire I used to extend the wire from the motor to the shopbot control board
got it on Amazon.com

2.2 Here is the connector to put on the end of the cable to connect to the control box.

3. The motor I listed is the one I used if you use another motor then I am unsure, however the motor I used has 6 wires and the control box uses 4
so it has to be wired up a certain way.
I'll post the wiring diagram for it when I get the time.

Sorry for taking so long been real busy at work.

Here is a PDF on how to wire the motor to the Wago plug
for the 4th Axis.
Keep in mind this will only work with the motor I used it may not work with other motors check specs to be sure.

Vexta PK299-02AA stepper motor
A : black
A- : green
B : red
B- : blue
You'll need to tape off the yellow and white leads you don't use them.

here is the unit values I used for the axis, again this is for the motor I used and the gears I listed .

A Unit Value: -23.80928571428572
B Unit Value: -23.80928571428572

If it turns in the wrong direction just remove the " - " from the start.

Under Speed values I use.

B move speed: 180
B jog speed : 300

these can be change to what you want I just thought I would share what works for me.
