I just discovered that as part of my Windows10 upgrade I now have a 3-D builder app installed (found it as an "Open With..." option when right clicking on a picture). I played only shortly with it and at least for converting images into .stl files it seems to have some use. It can do height maps, edges, pin stamps and contour mapping.

Has anybody tried this and made something practical with it?

Thanks, G.

i opened it looked around and decided it wasn't something i needed but i'll go back and give it a second look.

I'd love to be able to create height maps for my laser

I haven't been able to get any practical use for it, "models" come out looking like mush when imported ,,, May require thinking outside the box to find some sort of use for it.

I wish aspire gave better control over tuning the height map and export resolution for grey scale height maps

I'd rather not get 3D studio max or anything like that

I experimented a little more and found most regular photos tend to give a somewhat messy 3-d pattern. Something that worked quite well was converting a scanning electron microscope photo (I used one from an ant) with the 3-D Builder ("reverse" mode) and carved it into a 6x6" plate. IMO not too bad. I guess this is another free tool in the digital toolbox.

Don't know about the carving but that is one impressive ant pic - How'd you get him to hold still ??

 You freeze the ant and get very close with your camera...

Yes, not sure about the carving as well. I think the method is kind of promising as long as you have a good image.

cool, I doubt if I'd have the heart to off an ant, I'm a bug lover.

Nothing wrong with the carving it is what it is, like you say its free, and perhaps with tinkering can be developed into something more.
Not much into the design side, I am guessing a file like that could serve as the basis for something really nice with some work.
