Mask over stain?

I've been reading up on placing masking over paint before I v carve letters into the sign.
If I stain Oak, Cherry, walnut or BB, should I mask the stained wood before vcarving? Will the mask hold like it does the painted surface?

I would think you need to clear coat stain before masking.
