My neighbor, synappsys.com/, is a support service for artists and sculptors. They built their business by inventing and making their scanning services and a shopbot like 3D router. Fifteen years ago the router was made with off the shelf hardware, put together with their creative genius.

Some of their models are in excess of 25' tall. At this time they're building an Elephant exhibit at full size animals. Which means the Bull Elephant will be 12' in height. Once the HDU is glued together it's sprayed with clay about 1/2" deep. The artist who made the model comes in to finish the detail.

What a thrill to go by every day or two to see the progress. I'll be posting more as it comes along. On their website, I posted above, there's a movie showing how it all comes together.

Thanks Ken,

I forgot to mention the HDU is 2lb.

Did you get to visit Synappays while you were at the workshop? I should have take every over to see what they do.

That is the kind of thing that I wish I had the creativity to be a part of. Very cool stuff Joe, I watched the video and to me the artists make it happen in the end.

Technology and cnc part are cool to me cause I am growing up in the computer age I guess?

What fun seeing these images come together. Rubbing shoulders with some of the nations outstanding artists is a treat by itself. Jocelyn Russell is a dream to work with and such a casual person to be around. The talent oozes. Watching her speed while making critical cuts is amazing. www.WildlifeBronzes.com

All this begins with a small wax marquette shown in one of the pix. From there it's scanned and sent to the router. Once the foam is put together it's sprayed with clay. At that point the artists start the critical process of finishing. Then it's off to the foundry to be cast. I'll follow the process to the end which will take several weeks. Once the bronze has been properly textured, by hand, the finish coat of Liver of Sulphur.
