Getting a perfect brad point bit is getting more difficult to find. While there are many on the market, those with a Needle Point tip are becoming rare.

I'm a little hesitant to recommend these for the newcomer because they are delicate and easily broken. On some substrates it's best to make several passes. I first started using these bits when cutting sandblast mast. From there it went to profile shapes on decorative letters.

The photo's show work that would usually be done with a V bit. Sometimes it's fun to experiment. That's what we have here when I used a 1/4" bradpoint.

Very nice- Proof that the simplest things can be most beautiful.
As for the bit, guess I'll cherish the small one I have, though I've always known it to be called a beading bit- perhaps that term has taken over the brad point term..?

Jeff,

I think you're right about the nomenclature. These can be called out as beading bits. I've found them to be easily broken which is a heart break. The last one's I purchased, on line, didn't have the delicate little point which means they won't give the same affect.

Let me complement you on the beautiful work displayed on your website. You're a craftsman.

Just wanted to thank you Joe for your original post about these;

Point Cutting Roundovers/Barley Twists/ they're still the same critter.
Not using them like you, so I like the tiny flat for my cutouts on Celtics and 3D stuff(.2" material).
Lately using them for graceful countersinks and interior roundovers.
Hope you don't mind the pics, but a very useful little bit:)
Thanks again,
scott

Wow scott, I'm amazed you pulled up this old post from 2012. That was a lengthy thread that garnered lots of interest.

Glad to see how you are using these little bits. I think these bits are the most creative bits in ones arsenal. But lets not think they have to be the little guys. In that thread are letters looking like 3d but nothing more than a good old bradpoint. A person can make some attractive 3d looking letters by doing nothing more than follow a vector with one of these bits.
