Making a sign using some old barn wood?

I have someone who wants me to make a sign I plan to do a simple V carved sign I have some old I believe doug fir 2" x 12" rough cut material that is from a 100 year old barn. How do you think this will V carve? I plan to paint the carved area black what could I spray on the wood to seal it before carving to make painting the carved area easier so it does not bleed the paint into the non carved area?

I don't usually do signs in fact this would be the first paying sign job. If the old wood I have is not suitable I will do something else. The sign is not super detailed and I am still working with the person on the design.

when I have used old wood a straight bit usually is better because ti s not flat enough to vcarve well.

I've V-carved many signs out of old cedar fence boards and have had good results. You should really check out Joe Crumley's great magic mask method using rubber cement. Used it many times and it works great on rough cedar!

as long as the wood is pretty flat. I have done signs that had 1/8" height differences between boards. I prefer vcarving if possible. I have even done a few with the face charcoled.

I just finished up a sign last week for a wedding done on some 125 year old red pine barnwood. I was planning on VCarving but at the last minute decided to cut a template with the CNC and paint. I was just too worried about paint bleeding and didn't have any mask handy. Painted, distressed and waxed. Good luck!
