I want to carve a sign for my business out of wood. I have a logo that I want to use but it was not created by me and was never designed to be carved I have been working on it but to be honest I am not sure it will carve well without a lot of editing. On a decal the stickers look good but carving it in different layers has me lost I have spent many hours and made a lot of versions none of them to my liking. This sign will be outside at the end of my driveway in a rural setting I am allowd to put up a 2' x 2' sign and I will probably make it 2 sided. I am not sure what type wood to use and I have a bunch of solid oak doors from our cabinet upgrade a few years ago I want to make a practice sign with that before making the permanent sign. I will post my logo and what I have done so far any suggestions would be most welcome I am not a sign guy so this is new to me. I am wanting to do a multi layered sign but I am having problems figuring out the layers do to the design.
I posted this over on the vectric forum also. For some reason I can't seem to load a CRV file from Aspire here is a link to the thread I started on the Vectric site. http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=25819&p=185227#p185227
Thanks mike

HAVE YOU considered 3-d and then have it painted. There are some fish on vectorart3d.com that are close. Sometimes i look at this link jut to get some ideas, perhaps you might like looking as well.

I like the last version you posted on the Vectric forum. I'm not a sign guy but I would change the font (my opinion). Fix-it-Mike suggestions might just clean it up enough to read better. In the end it's what looks good to you.

Thanks guys for the suggestions I am trying to learn a little about signs I would like to try and get into doing a few if this one comes out good. I could use another good one for my booth at the sportsman shows I do.

Mike just looking at the image you attached, and being its your first sign, I'd look at doing a V carve with all of the dark blue.
I did a quick 5 min reduce colors and vector trace to create a file to cut with a 90 degree v bit.
Sign size 24 inch wide, would work on this small but if you want large then a 120 degree bit so it doesn't cut so deep when carving it.

Turned on depth colors so you can kind of see the v carving.
This would be a quick fix for now and you could always up the complexity of the sign as time and skills allows.

I'd recommend finding a carved sign you like and posting it. Then people can give you advise on how to adapt that style to your logo.
You can carve your logo a bunch of different ways. You could do it where it's a "sandcarved" kind of look. You could do a stacked material look. You could do a basic v-carve look. It's all your call.

I would Vcarve the background oval part of the logo with the fish on a thick board. Then I would attach a separate thinner board with MILLER MARINE vcarved on it. If you use a thick enough board and the right Vbit you can carve the oval double sided where you wouldn't have to do but 2 of the MILLER MARINE boards.

You could always rip those doors down to size, plane them, glue up and stack them to make extra thick material to carve both sides of it. When you run your Vcarve toolpath it will tell you how thick you're carving down into your material so you can know how thick you need it.
